What Is an Economics Degree?

Are you passionate about the business and finance sector? Do you follow the national and international news? Then, an Economics degree is the answer. It has always been one of the most sought-after degrees amongst youth.

Economics degrees are designed to tackle all the issues that have an impact on financial situations, ranging from production to how resources are used. Candidates are trained to understand how the economy suffers fluctuations based on the market’s needs and wants followed by the market’s supply and demand.

By far one of the most crucial elements is that economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomic. Microeconomics deals with the economic behaviour at an individual level (companies, buyers, sellers and others), whilst macroeconomics illustrates the bigger picture, on a national or global scale (unemployment, economic growth, inflation and so on).

Benefits of an Economics Degree

Having an economics degree increases anyone’s chances to find a job, regardless of the field. This is mainly due to the fact that graduates hold many transferable abilities, such as analytical and problem-solving skills, that are suitable for any career.

A study made by the London School of Economics and Political Science showed that graduates from an economics course have a starting salary of £33,000 per year. Having a job in the field right after graduation is a major positive aspect and comes with a lot of opportunities for career advancement.

Economics Degree Structure

Economics degrees are usually a three years commitment and sometimes are offered as part of a joint degree. This means that Economics can be studied along with another subject such as engineering, management, law, computer science and others.

This degree can be found either as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BSc focuses more on economical theory and statistical techniques, while BA is combined with social sciences and qualitative modules.

A flexible and affordable path to higher education

As a UNISA student, I’d say it’s a solid choice, especially if you need flexibility. UNISA makes it possible to study while working, running a business, or managing family responsibilities, which is a huge advantage for me. The online platform (myUnisa) is generally easy to use, and most study materials are well-structured and clear enough to guide you even if you’re studying on your own. The tuition fees are more affordable compared to many other universities, and the qualifications are respected in South Africa and beyond. You really learn to become disciplined and independent, which is a valuable skill in the real world. Some lecturers are very responsive and helpful, especially during exam periods. That said, you do need patience. Administration can be slow at times, and feedback on assignments isn’t always immediate. If you’re someone who needs constant face to face support, it might feel challenging. Overall, UNISA is a great university for self-motivated students who want a recognised qualification and the freedom to study at their own pace.

You can study while working or living anywhere.

My opinion is mixed. Academically, I believe the standard is high. If you can pass a PPE degree at UNISA, you have proven you are self-disciplined and resilient. I like that I can study from home and that the fees are affordable.

However, I dislike the administrative support. It is often very difficult to communicate with the university; emails often go unanswered, and resolving registration or mark queries can take months. The lack of student support can feel isolating, and you truly are on your own most of the time. If you are self-motivated, you will succeed, but don’t expect much hand-holding.

Yes, I would recommend it. The PPE curriculum is strong and forces you to engage deeply with the texts. However, you miss out on the in-person debates that you get at campus universities, so you have to be proactive about finding study groups. It is an excellent choice if you are self-motivated and want to save on tuition costs.

    The availability

It’s a unique experience since it’s a online university most of the time they do have a campus but it’s for students to go and read not necessarily be taught there so it gives you a lot of freedom to do other things like get a job while studying or do 2 degrees at once since the unisa one doesn’t need a lot of attention since it’s online it’s a good university for people who want to have something else going for them while completing their studies

    UNISA REVIEW

I think a little more support would be appreciated because not all lecturers will go through the course work with students ti ensure understanding. There are some courses where you finish the semester without having met with your lecturers. I also appreciate the fact that it’s so flexible. You work at your own pace and at your own rhythm.

    Money over Modules?

I would start off by saying, in my opinion this is one of the most populated universities in South Africa. The University is somewhat affordable to the middle-class family in South Africa. The establishment seems to care more about the money aspect rather than the individual.

I like my programme, it can be challenging but I learn a lot of things from it like analytical skills and statistics. It’s empowering and inspiring and I hope to be one of the best economists yet. Thank you.

The university’s commitment to continuous improvement gives me confidence that these areas will be addressed.

In conclusion, UNISA is an excellent institution that offers quality education, flexibility, and a supportive, inclusive environment. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a fulfilling academic experience.
