North-West University is a place that really equips its students to succeed, both in South Africa and beyond. The university has built a reputation for producing graduates who can step into the workplace and make a meaningful impact. What I like about NWU is that it’s not just about academics, but also about preparing us for real-world challenges with skills that last. Of course, like any institution, there are areas that can be improved, but even with that, NWU still stands out as one of the best universities in the country.

View moreIn 2023, I had the opportunity to enroll in the Short Course on Point of Sale (POS) and Workplace Readiness at North-West University. As a student preparing to enter the workforce, I was eager to acquire practical skills that would enhance my employability and understanding of retail operations. This review reflects my experiences throughout the course, detailing its structure, content, teaching methods, and overall impact on my career readiness. The short course was meticulously designed, spanning a few weeks and encompassing both theoretical and practical components. The curriculum was divided into two main sections: Point of Sale systems and Workplace Readiness. The first half of the course focused on POS systems, which are crucial in retail and hospitality settings. We began with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of POS technology, exploring various types of systems and their functionalities. This foundational knowledge was vital, as it set the stage for our practical training.
One of the highlights was the hands-on experience with real POS software. We learned how to process transactions, manage inventory, and generate sales reports. The instructors provided us with various scenarios, allowing us to simulate real-life situations. This experiential learning was particularly beneficial; it not only built our confidence but also enhanced our problem-solving skills in a retail context.
The second half of the course concentrated on workplace readiness, which is essential for any professional environment. This section included modules on effective communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and time management. We participated in group activities and role-playing exercises, which were instrumental in developing soft skills that are often overlooked in traditional academic settings.
Additionally, we covered topics like resume writing, interview techniques, and professional networking. The instructors provided valuable feedback on our resumes and conducted mock interviews, which significantly boosted my confidence. This comprehensive approach ensured that we were not just technically equipped but also prepared to navigate the nuances of a professional environment. The teaching methods employed during the course were diverse and engaging. The instructors utilized a mix of lectures, discussions, and interactive workshops. Their expertise and enthusiasm were evident, making the learning experience enjoyable and impactful.
The use of technology was another commendable aspect. We had access to online resources, including recorded lectures and supplementary materials, which facilitated our learning outside of the classroom. This flexibility allowed me to revisit complex topics and reinforce my understanding.
Moreover, the collaborative atmosphere fostered a sense of community among participants. We often worked in groups, sharing insights and experiences that enriched our learning. This peer interaction was invaluable, as it exposed us to different perspectives and ideas.
Taking this short course significantly influenced my professional development. Firstly, my understanding of POS systems has been greatly enhanced. I feel well-prepared to handle retail transactions and understand the backend processes that contribute to efficient business operations. This knowledge is particularly relevant given the increasing reliance on technology in the retail sector.
The workplace readiness training was equally transformative. I have become more adept at communicating effectively, both in writing and verbally. The interview preparation sessions were particularly beneficial; I now approach job interviews with a sense of preparedness that I previously lacked. Furthermore, I have developed a better understanding of workplace dynamics and the importance of teamwork and collaboration.
Another significant aspect was the emphasis on self-reflection and personal development. Throughout the course, we were encouraged to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses, setting personal goals for improvement. This reflective practice has been instrumental in fostering a growth mindset, allowing me to view challenges as opportunities for development. The Short Course on Point of Sale and Workplace Readiness at North-West University was an enriching experience that equipped me with both technical and soft skills essential for my career. The comprehensive curriculum, expert instruction, and collaborative learning environment made this course highly effective.
As I transition into the workforce, I feel confident in my ability to contribute positively to any organization. I wholeheartedly recommend this course to fellow students seeking to enhance their employability and prepare for the challenges of the modern workplace. The skills and insights gained from this program will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation for my future endeavors.

View moreI love every bit of my time here at North West University Potchefstroom Campus. The environment is beautiful, lecturers are caring and support services are incredibly helpful.
I love being here at all times.
North-West University (NWU) is honestly a vibe. It’s got a good mix of academics, culture, and student life. The campuses are clean and safe, the lecturers actually care (well, most of them), and there’s always something happening — from sports to student events. It’s a place where you can grow, meet cool people, and still have fun while working towards your goals. Not perfect, but definitely worth it.
View moreI love the location, everything is so convenient , but the lack of practical opportunities is a bit disheartening.
The classes are good but have language barriers, but translation is available though.
My overall experience at NWU was neutral. While I had some great times and enjoyed certain aspects, I found it challenging to interact with lecturers and professionals. However, I often sought help from fellow students, which was really helpful. I would recommend that the university try to engage with all students more actively and explore different approaches to support those who are less outspoken. With a bit more effort in this area, I believe the university could provide an even more inclusive and supportive environment for all students
