Student review [#13316] for Mathematics
at University of Primorska

I got an undergraduate degree in mathematics from UP FAMNIT. In my opinion, they paid much more attention to marketing, competitions, awards, grades, rankings etc. than to actually improving their program and developing themselves. The program was mediocre, but probably okay for such a young and small institution if you don’t expect much. A lot of the courses in my area were taught for the first time when I was there, and for some of them, the professors themselves did not seem comfortable with the material. There was not enough homework to practice, often studying math was more like getting acquainted with facts there. They gave me an opportunity to do some research, but my impression was that they only wanted to produce a paper and not go deeper into the subject. It was quite a disappointing experience, taking into account all the excitement they created. They used any opportunity to promote themselves and asked their students to do that as if it is something everyone should want to do.

My concern is that they invite clever young students from other countries and tell them (even ingrain) how amazing the place is. I hope you don’t get trapped like me.

It seems to me that they continue with their policy of misinforming, looking at their Facebook pages. In their promotional material of 2019, they state that UP FAMNIT’s Mathematics program is ranked 15th worldwide by U-Multirank. But this is not true, of course! If you check out U-Multirank’s approach to university rankings, you will find out that they certainly did not rank UP FAMNIT’s mathematics program 15th worldwide, as well as they did not rank any other program 1st, or 7th, or 38th.
