It is a part of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute (Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa) and places a special focus on balancing the theoretical with the practical in their programmes of study, earning itself a reputation in the industry for its well-qualified and well-prepared graduates.
The idea for a media school in Lisbon first came about in 1979 when it was presented to the Portuguese government, but did not become a reality until 1989 when ESCS welcomed its first students. ESCS has been operating at its current facility since 1994 – in a building that has itself won awards thanks to its design by architecture Carrilho de Graça.
