Known as the Escola Superior de Communicação Social or ESCS in Portuguese, the School of Communication and Media Studies is an important institution of third level education located in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon.Show more
It is a part of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute (Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa) and places a special focus on balancing the theoretical with the practical in their programmes of study, earning itself a reputation in the industry for its well-qualified and well-prepared graduates.
The idea for a media school in Lisbon first came about in 1979 when it was presented to the Portuguese government, but did not become a reality until 1989 when ESCS welcomed its first students. ESCS has been operating at its current facility since 1994 – in a building that has itself won awards thanks to its design by architecture Carrilho de Graça.
Studies at ESCS
Degree programmes are offered at under- and postgraduate levels as well as certain subjects being taught through English. The school is divided into the following departments: Audiovisual and Multimedia, Communication Sciences, Human Sciences, Social Sciences, Statistics, Media and Journalism, Advertising and Marketing, and Public Relations and Organisational Communication. As well as Portuguese students the school welcomes international students too.
Scientific research is conducted at ESCS as well as its taught programmes of study.
