Studying at IST
The school offers courses at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate levels as well as online courses. IST also works with other institutions around the world and offers joint degrees (masters and PhD) with, for example, Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) and UT-Austin.
Approximately 11,000 students are in attendance at IST alongside 1,200 faculty members and researchers.
Since its founding in May 1911 the school has amassed a significant number of alumni; a number of which have worked in prominent positions in Portugal, such as CEOs, government ministers, and two prime ministers of Portugal, as well as internationally; a Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Between 1952 and 1972 twelve study centres were set up in Portugal, with three of them based at IST. These centres focused on work in the areas of Chemistry, Electronics, Geology, and Mineralogy. These centres contributed significantly to IST’s future as an important Portuguese institution of research and education.
Life at IST
The school is comprised of three campuses, namely Alameda, Taguspark, and CTN. These bases can all easily be reached by Lisbon’s public transport system and a shuttle. These modes of transportation also allow students to easily find their way around the city of Lisbon.
As for accommodation, the school has three student residences to offer to students.

It’s a great university and provides a great insight to the “engineering world” however the campus is quite old and most buildings don’t have a modern touch to it.
I would recommend it to everyone willing to work hard for the goals the teachers expect
A great focus was put on the fundamentals of mathematics and physics fields, truly important to fully follow the subsequent subjects. With a wide variety of extracurriculars to choose from and an increasingly liberal and modern study plan, it is increasingly appealing to study at Técnico, which also offers good opportunities for international exchange, internship or work opportunities. Definitely the best engineering school in Portugal.
IST is a good university. The quality of teaching can vary from class to class but it’s overall okay. While some of the teachers are really good and do their best to share their knowledge with the students, others can make classes more difficult than they should be, not impossible but a little more stressful. Some say it’s the best engineering university in Portugal and I agree, upon enrolment, we have to learn much faster than we’re used to, preparing us for everything that comes. Besides that, IST has a really good reputation and due to that, entry into the job market is much easier.
IST is organised very poorly. They enrolled us in a master that did not exist. After that the communication was not smooth and we had to fix everything by ourselves.
Moreover, one of the ‘new classes’ also did not exist. We had to discover this ourselves again. Again, the communication was not clear.
The professors and classes were okay. Some were chaotic but it was not a deal-breaker.
I have learned some new things.
The best thing about IST is the location, it is located in the centre of the city and is easy to get to. However, the Campus feels outdated and it even rains inside (Engineering building nonetheless).
The sports fields were very nice and cheap.
There was some information provided but nothing special. I found my space on myself.
This program is worthwhile. The professors are responsible and patient, for example, they will give extra lectures when we have a public holiday that conflicts with the normal course. And also professors and Students association organize a nice opening ceremony for new Students. For me, an exchange student, they provide a Portuguese Language course
For my program, some subjects have several mini Tests(weekly sometimes) which are annoying, but also motivate me to review the contents I learn.
Overall, I will recommend this program, for me the study is not so stressful.
Instituto Superior Técnico is the best engineering school in Portugal and one of the best in Europe. Studying there is very demanding and the social life is scarce, but the career prospects are superb.
