As a third-year student at the University of Lagos, I’ve had my fair share of highs and lows here, but honestly, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Academically, UNILAG is no joke. The workload can be heavy, and sometimes it feels like lecturers expect you to know everything already. Still, most of them genuinely want you to learn once you show interest, they’re usually willing to help. There are days when the system frustrates you missing scripts, postponed classes, or power issues but you learn to adapt quickly. It teaches you grit, time management, and how to hustle your way through challenges.
Outside the classroom, UNILAG has this unbeatable energy. The social life here is one of the best parts of being a student. There’s always something happening concerts, departmental weeks, entrepreneurial fairs, and random hangouts at Love Garden or Lagoon Front. You meet people from every part of Nigeria, and everyone brings their own vibe and story. The campus is full of creatives musicians, designers, influencers, and tech guys so it’s easy to get inspired or even start something new.
Hostel life is a whole different experience. It’s noisy, sometimes chaotic, but honestly, that’s where the real memories are made late-night gist, power outages that turn into bonding sessions, and those last-minute exam preps that somehow pull you through.
UNILAG definitely has its flaws the stress, the heat, the occasional strike but it has a way of toughening you up. It’s the kind of place that forces you to grow, find your voice, and figure out who you are. Being an Akokite comes with pride because you know you’ve earned it.
The University of Lagos is a university that breeds intelligent and well grounded students, it focuses on not just building students academic prowess but also making sure they have a good social standing and are ready for the outside world. This has also been made possible by the lecturers. As a result of their authenticity in teaching the students, they have been able to pass across tangible qualities and skills to the students that can aid in their day to day activities.
