What Is a Medicine Degree?

Saving someone’s life is perhaps one of the most remarkable feelings in the world. Even so, not so many of us have the chance to experience this. It takes passion, a strong personality and years of study to be able to work in the medical field.

Pursuing a Medical degree is not only challenging and demanding but also competitive. Medical degrees are shaped for people who show high motivation and commitment as well as interest for sciences.

Throughout a Medicine degree, candidates are equipped with a wide range of competences, from practical abilities required for specialized hands-on tasks to communication skills needed to interact with the patients. Thus, any medical students will be able to take a simple blood sample as well as perform a complex surgical procedure.

Benefits of a Medical Degree

Undoubtedly, medicine is one of the most vital fields of work – therefore there will always be a high demand of workforce needed. The employment rate for a medical graduate student is of 90%.

Due to its diverse branches, graduates from a Medical course have a variety of career choices, according to their expertise. Nursing, radiology, anaesthetics are just some of the many specialities offered in this field. Regardless of the speciality, the most important aspect needed to be taken into consideration is that medical professionals are well-respected and well-paid all over the world.

Additionally, graduates possess a series of transferable skills, such as logical reasoning, critical appraisal, listening, written and oral communication and many others. These assets are sought and highly valuable in most fields of work.

Medical Degree Structure

Medical courses are usually a six-year commitment, but it can vary according to the university. Most of the modern universities integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the academic curriculum, while traditional institutions divide them into preclinical and clinical education.

Most schools understand the importance of practical knowledge, especially in this field, therefore they encourage the students to observe professional healthcare practitioners. Another way to gain practical experience is to go to different clinics and receive specialised training, followed by actual practical work.

No matter the practices of the university, always keep in mind that medical courses are structured differently in every country. Therefore, medical qualifications gained in one country are not necessarily recognised in another country.

Making the "right" Choices in your Student life

I am a 700level student of University of Ibadan, studying Epidemiology. I have always wanted to be a Medical Researcher, someone at the forefront of discoveries and “bulk lives saving” and here I am coming from a course (BSc. Physiology) that I completed because I couldn’t get me an admission offer to study my dream course at the time. I’m excited to be here. The lectures are precise and focused, they train you to handle numbers (Medical statistics) as a key part of public health, and the task, though bulky, is easy for me because of my natural inclination towards Epidemiology. I am passionate about making impact in Education as well. I run a STEM Academy for children aged 6-18 because every student out there deserves to experience this feeling throughout their study. Not “enduring” but enjoying their student life.

    Character

It’s been great so far. The University has impacted my learning and character growth. I dislike all strike actions held, the school’s strict outlook to it’s Student’s government and associations. I like the emphasis on excellence and extracurriculars. I will recommend it to those who don’t have enough money to go to a private university for a 4 year course. But for other 5 or 6 year courses, which are not usually done in private universities here in Nigeria, I will recommend them to come, UI does well.

    Lectures

The methods of lecturing were profound and quite interesting. The lecture rooms were quite conducive and good for learning.

Majority of the lecturers are well baked and fully rounded for the various classes and lecture they handled.

    Challenging

I strongly believe that my institution is dedicated to churning out graduates that have been tested, yet withstood the tests. I like the fact that the institution remains committed to maintaining and even improving, its status at all times. I think the institution can improve on its responsiveness to students’ feedback. I highly recommend this institution

    Excellence and Togetherness

The medical school at the University of Ibadan is currently the best in sub-Saharan Africa. Student life is a great experience, there’s sports engagement and various Christian fellowship meetings. Though staying off-campus is not as safe as staying on campus. Living expenses are also on average. The technology available is also not so advanced, but it’s still the best available in Nigeria. The set of lecturers and faculty members are the very best that can be found in their field. The career prospect is also great, as University of Ibadan graduates are one of the most sought after graduates in the country.

    Conducive Academic Environment

I particularly liked the academic environment the University of Ibadan offers- very quiet, the library is centrally located and accessible to all, and during exam periods, we were allowed to study till very late into the night. The lecturers are excellent, and most of the administrative staff are available and willing to help when the need arises.

I however didn’t like that there was too much emphasis on academic pursuit as against other extra-curricular activities. Of course, there were student organizations here and there, but in my opinion, the average University of Ibadan student does not know how to balance his or her work to include them. This is what I believe the school management can work on.

I definitely recommend the University of Ibadan to others, including international students. There is a provision for that at the admissions office for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

As a graduate of the University of Ibadan, I have found myself in the top rank among my colleagues at work as a result of the high-quality training I received.

General appraisal of my stay thus far in UI medical school.

By way of introduction, I’m a final year medical student at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. My experience so far in school has not been that rosy, a blend of many good and sad moments. I would say it has been “bittersweet”. The journey into becoming a medical doctor started roughly 8 years ago, it’s clear I’ve had to spend longer time than expected, hence the frustration, distress, and agony in the face of the seemingly toxic environment we’ve all had to adapt to in a bid to keep our heads above the water. The fun moments were the times we had to face the trials that come with preparing for the revered medical examinations and coming off with flying colours. I’ll end with this: I’m stronger and better. I’m of the opinion that students seeking admission to the medical program at UI should be well prepared mentally and psychologically as this will help them surmount the challenges that will be faced in their journey. I’m persuaded that there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel for medical professionals globally.

    Great times at uni

The university is a nice place with a kind of serene environment for learning. The hostels were not so adequate but manageable. The professors were mostly nice and always ready to help. School activities were well scheduled and although there might have been less than enough equipment for practicals most times but we pulled through.

    Premiere University

What I like about my university is that it has the whole facilities required for the medical program I’m studying. The building and environmental structure of the school are quite standard and this makes life convenient for students and staff living on campus.
The academic aspect of the university is outstanding among its peers in Nigeria.
I also like the student lecturer relationship as the lecturer’s doors are always open to listen and give possible corrections to students’ complaints.
In terms of career prospects, UI has laid the ground to produce professionals in all the fields the institution is offering.
The only problem with the school is that its social and cultural aspect is lagging behind.
