As a graduate of the University of Calabar from the Human Kinetics and Health Education department, my experience was a blend of ups and downs, yet the defining factor for my success was the close relationship I cultivated with the lecturers. Enrolling in 2007, I was optimistic about completing my program in four years, but frequent academic strikes prolonged my stay to six years, and I finally graduated in 2012. This delay was frustrating, as it disrupted the academic flow, but it also gave me time to reflect and build resilience.
The lecturers in my department played a pivotal role in shaping my academic journey. Their guidance, constructive criticism, and accessibility outside the classroom helped me stay focused despite the disruptions. They nurtured a sense of discipline and academic rigour that kept me grounded. Though some might view certain lecturers as strict, I found that their high standards and commitment to students were essential in helping me achieve my 3.6 GPA.
While the academic strikes posed challenges, the university’s resources compensated in some ways. The library, though not always well-stocked with the latest materials, provided a conducive environment for self-study, which was critical for my growth, especially in writing and research. Over time, I honed my soft skills, particularly in communication and writing, partly due to the extracurricular opportunities available. The university also had some seminars and workshops that helped me sharpen these skills, which have proven invaluable in my career.
Overall, my experience at the University of Calabar was shaped by both the obstacles and the support I received from the faculty. The lessons I learned extended far beyond the classroom, preparing me for the challenges of life and work in Nigeria’s fast-evolving landscape
