I attended the University of Calabar, located in Cross River State, Nigeria. My experience there was both formative and enriching, contributing significantly to my personal development and career path.
Academic Experience:
The academic environment was intellectually stimulating. Although there were occasional challenges with scheduling and resource availability, the lecturers were generally committed and knowledgeable in their respective fields. The Environmental Studies program, in particular, offered a broad view of ecological, policy, and developmental issues that have proved relevant in today’s work environment.
Campus Life:
The University of Calabar has a vibrant campus culture. From student groups to inter-faculty activities, it’s easy to stay engaged. The student union and departmental associations played a strong role in giving students a voice and creating avenues for leadership.
Facilities and Infrastructure:
Like many public universities in Nigeria, infrastructural challenges were present. Classrooms, libraries, and laboratories could benefit from more consistent funding and upgrades. However, students generally made the best of the resources available.
Overall Impact:
Despite infrastructural limitations, my time at UNICAL gave me critical thinking skills, resilience, and an appreciation for collaboration skills I’ve carried throughout my career. I also formed lasting friendships and professional connections during my time there.
Would I recommend it?
Yes, especially for students who are self-driven and able to navigate a system that occasionally requires patience and persistence. The University of Calabar offers a good foundation, particularly when supplemented with real-world exposure and continuous learning.
