The University of Calabar is a vibrant and academically solid institution, known for its strong programs in law, medicine, and the arts. While it faces challenges like strikes and infrastructure issues, its rich campus life and dedicated lecturers make it a rewarding place to study. I like the university overall and would recommend it to students who are focused, adaptable, and ready to make the most of the experience.
View moreStudying at the University of Calabar was a defining part of my life. I was in the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology — the only one offering that course in the whole of Nigeria. That alone made the experience feel unique. However, the department still lacks the recognition and support it deserves.
The curriculum is actually quite impressive. In terms of content, it’s better than what I’ve seen from similar programs abroad. But the truth is, it’s not yet up to full global standards, especially in practical application, research opportunities, and exposure.
Some lecturers were truly passionate and supportive, while others weren’t as engaging. The academic environment had its ups and downs. Strikes, limited facilities, and delays were part of the reality. But all of that taught me patience, adaptability, and how to make the best out of tough situations.
If you’re considering UNICAL, especially Genetics and Biotechnology, be ready to push yourself. The system won’t hand you everything, but if you stay focused, you’ll leave with more than just a degree — you’ll gain resilience and perspective.
View moreOne of the most impressive aspects of the University of Calabar was its academic environment. The university offered a wide range of programs, taught by knowledgeable professors who were passionate about their subjects. The curriculum was challenging but engaging, encouraging students to think critically and apply their knowledge to real-world problems. The university’s library and research facilities were also commendable, providing ample resources for students to expand their understanding beyond the classroom.
View moreThe University of Calabar is enriched in its ability to make sure students are academically wise. They teach their students to be on top in all they do. Having the necessary facilities to put their students through their academic experience and engaging in excursions to boost their work experience, is why I like my school and I advise anyone looking for admission to come to my school.
View moreThe college’s infrastructure is limited, but they have made the best use of the available space. There is an auditorium with a seating capacity of approximately 500 students. The course curriculum is very well structured, and the faculty is excellent. They understand and excel at what they teach.
View moreThe school is in shambles. It seems as though the professors go beyond to annoy the students. Lesson halls are overwhelmed by lecturer offices.
Due to a lack of spaces, students are crammed into common areas during class.
We pay practical dues each semester and have a finite stock of practical equipment, but there isn’t any new equipment supplied.
View moreFirst of all, I must applaud the school for being able to include a course like Genetics and Biotechnology in the school learning curriculum, and also fighting for its accreditation. However, that’s not enough, we ought to have an applied understanding of what this course is about. That’s where the school is missing it, atleast narrowing down to my field of study. We’re lacking equipment to practice the theory we’ve learnt so far from our amiable lecturers and professors.
View moreThe environment in the school is beautiful and pleasant. Although It has poor sports facilities, small lecture halls that make it uncomfortable, sometimes bully lecturers (there are nice ones), poor result handling system and some lecturers are very poor at showing up for classes. Also there are sometimes classes by 7am and sometimes classes up till 6pm.
View moreI love the fact that our lectures are orderly and some of the lecturers love their jobs. I like the students relation with each other. I don’t like the unfair grading and foul play attimes. They should improve on their staffs and teaching methods. I would loosely recommend it to anyone. They’re not quite international but one step at a time. My chances of career prospects are at a low due to the rarity of my course and the country’s present situation
View moreI like that the classes are coordinated mostly and some of the lecturers are solely dedicated to teaching us. I like the student’s relations and coordination.
