    Biochemistry at Nnamdi Azikiwe University

The university is generally a great option, located in a semi urban area, easy access into the school facilities ( I can’t remember being lost in Awka even once).

First year is generally tedious for all science students as there is general science courses for all the science students to attend to lectures together, all of which are CBT Exams.

Biochemistry in UNIZIK like it’s informally called is an eye opener to what the body is made of, what could go wrong and possible solutions, it’s fascinating as the professors and lecturers in the department are well grounded and invested in the course.

The cost of living in Awka as someone that stayed in the north is very high and frustrating and accommodation currently ranges between 300 thousand naira to 800 thousand naira for a self contain and hostel space between 70 thousand to 250 thousand naira which always makes buying a hostel space a very serious work during the time.

Lastly, the school calender is one that doesn’t rush students so much that they’re squeezed and also don’t drag a semester so much that the students are burnt out and tired.

A Vibrant Academic Hub with Room for Growth

Being a student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University has been a mix of ups and downs, but overall, it’s been a good experience. I study Food Science and Technology, and while there are challenges like power outages or delays in the academic calendar, I’ve learned to adapt and stay focused.

The lecturers in my department are generally supportive and know their stuff, though sometimes things can feel a bit disorganized. Still, I’ve grown a lot here—not just academically, but personally too. Campus life is lively, and there’s always something going on. It’s easy to find your place if you put yourself out there.

UNIZIK isn’t perfect, but it’s taught me resilience, independence, and how to make the most out of whatever situation I find myself in.

    My University experience and advise

The very first advice I have for newly admitted university students is: don’t be overexcited or get carried away. University is a different ball game compared to high school. Take every course seriously and approach each topic as if you’ve never heard of it before. This mindset will help you build a strong foundation and avoid assumptions that can lead to gaps in your understanding. Don’t underestimate the workload; it’s significantly heavier than what you were used to. Time management becomes crucial. Learn to prioritize tasks and develop effective study habits early on. Procrastination is your enemy in university.

One of the biggest adjustments I faced was the increased independence. No one is going to constantly remind you of deadlines or push you to study. You are responsible for your own learning. This freedom can be exhilarating, but it also requires discipline. I learned this the hard way in my first semester. I was so caught up in the social aspect of university life that my grades suffered. It was a wake-up call. I had to learn to balance my social life with my academic responsibilities.

What stood out for me during my university experience was the quality of some of the professors. I had a particularly impactful professor in my Introduction to Psychology course. They had a way of making complex theories understandable and engaging. Their passion for the subject was contagious, and it sparked a genuine interest in psychology in me. I also appreciated their willingness to meet with students outside of class to discuss course material or provide guidance. These interactions made a huge difference in my learning experience.

Campus life also played a significant role in my university journey. Joining a few clubs and organizations helped me connect with like-minded individuals and build a strong support network. It also provided opportunities for personal growth and leadership development. I highly recommend getting involved in extracurricular activities. It’s a great way to meet new people, explore your interests, and develop valuable skills.

One specific piece of advice I would give is to utilize the resources available to you. The university offers a wide range of support services, from academic advising to tutoring to career counseling. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these resources. They are there to help you succeed. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s from a professor, a teaching assistant, or a classmate, everyone struggles at some point. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

University is a challenging but rewarding experience. It’s a time for intellectual growth, personal development, and building lifelong friendships. Embrace the challenges, learn from your mistakes, and make the most of this incredible opportunity.

    Superb

Nnamdi Azikiwe University is a well-known federal University in Nigeria known for its diverse academic program and a solid foundation in research and innovation. It is located in Anambra State and offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The key strengths of the University is its emphasis on academic excellence, providing opportunities for students to engage in research and entrepreneurial activities. Over the years, the University has produced notable alumni in various fields which reflects positively in its educational standards. My likes about the University are its academic excellence, diverse programs, entrepreneurship studies, cultural diversity, research opportunities etc. My dislikes about Nnamdi Azikiwe University are its slow processing of academic results, certificates and transcripts; water and power issues, strikes, infrastructure challenges, bad road etc. I would recommend Nnamdi Azikiwe University based on several factors such as its quality education, different programs across various disciplines, its academic excellence, cultural diversity and entrepreneurship focus. However students should be aware of some of the challenges like occasional administrative delays, frequent strikes and infrastructure limitations. If you are prepared to navigate these issues which are common in many public Nigerian universities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University can offer a rewarding academic and personal experience.
