What Is a Marketing Degree?

A business cannot survive if its products are not marketed in the proper way. Luckily for all the businesses out there, the number of candidates wanting to pursue a marketing career is growing tremendously.

The aim of this degree is to help students anticipate, manage, and satisfy customers’ needs and wants. By doing so, they will be able to effectively communicate the benefits of any business product to the targeted market.

Due to the fact that marketing is a complex industry, which tackles many areas ranging from market research to advertising and promotion, this degree focuses on all parts of the process before concentrating on a particular area of study.

Benefits of a Marketing Degree

Good news for marketing graduates! If you did not know yet, marketing is an essential aspect of all types of businesses, from all sectors of activity. Thus, all of them rely on marketers to promote and sell their products. A high market demand comes with many job opportunities available.

According to Labor Department Findings, graduates with a marketing degree can earn 98% more per hour than the ones working in the industry without having a specialised degree.

Furthermore, students are equipped with transferable skills, such as excellent communication abilities, strategic thinking, planning, data analysis and so on, that can be used in other industries too.

Marketing Degree Structure

Marketing degrees can be studied either as Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). The major difference lies in the presence of more scientific and technological aspects, which are commonly seen in a BSc rather than a BA.

Like most degrees, marketing courses last between three and four years, depending on the university. However, there are institutions which give students the possibility to do a two-year associate’s degree – also called a ‘foundation’ degree.

Even if graduating from both degrees qualifies candidates to work in this industry, a Bachelor degree has higher chances to lead you to well-paid jobs.

    The people and culture

I had a really positive experience at this University. I made friends easily and found that everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Compared to the other Universities I considered, there was a much friendly culture at AUT, and I found that everyone was very welcoming.

The one aspect that I didn’t like was that it took me quite a while to travel in from home. I live in South Auckland so there was a long commute. This could have easily been remedied if I had decided to board, or move closer to the city. I also know that they have since opened up a campus in South Auckland, which is great for those who live in South Auckland!

    University resources

I had a positive university experience at AUT. I felt that the university wanted to help me succeed in my career. Most of the teachers were helpful and would be responsive to my questions whether it would be in person or over email. The university offered various career fairs and opportunities for employment. I’d say in some classes I struggled to make friends. Most students at AUT were friendly and assignments didn’t seem like a competition. I would say I struggled to make friends in certain classes but that could’ve been due to covid being prominent at the time. Overall, I would recommend AUT to someone wanted to pursue a higher education. Especially if it is something that they’re passionate about.

Student culture at AUT is vibrant and friendly

AUT is a very hands-on university, in terms of the relationship between students and lecturers as well as among peers. The university had some financial issues in the past year and as much as it inconvenienced a lot of staff, I do not hold the university at fault. I enjoy my time learning and making friends at AUT City campus.

    Quality, Well-Informed Education and Facilities

Auckland University of Technology’s Communications Bachelor provides a fantastic insight into various communication industries. During my time studying I have encountered many tutors who are industry professionals, who have had valuable and insightful advice and I have felt well-supported and prepared during assessment periods.

The facilities are fantastic, spaces are clean and neat, lots of study areas and multiple spaces on campus to use industry-standard equipment. The radio equipment has been neglected however. Myself and my peers experienced multiple technical errors during our second year of study which are yet to be properly looked at.

I will admit that the first year of the Communications Bacherlor, the common year, is a bit lacking in it’s exploration of all the majors and minors provided. There was no real effort to create interest in majors like Radio and Audio Media or minors like Professional Performance Communications. I feel they should expand their content to include all subjects to allow students to make informed decisions and open them up to new industry pathways.

Overall, I have really enjoyed my time at AUT and it is a fantastic place to learn from industry professionals and make use of industry-standard equipment. However, it would be great to see attention given equally to all majors and minors during the first common year of study.

    Comprehensiveness

I was studying marketing majoring in hospitality management. My programme offered me a diverse range of courses and knowledge about hospitality and marketing. For example, we had practical sessions in the kitchen and restaurant in my first year to learn and get experience in the hospitality industry; for the marketing courses, we not only learned about traditional marketing concepts but also had digital marketing courses and projects to learn about digital marketing.

    Interestingly unique

I am a master’s student at AUT and am studying marketing at the moment. Till now the journey has been very interesting and stressful. Loved meeting so many new people and exploring the ins and outs of the culture and education. Looking forward to upgrading my skills and working in a learnable environment.
