    Strong Fundamentals

The Software Engineering BSc at Vilnius University is a solid, academically grounded program that focuses on building a broad and reliable foundation in computing rather than just teaching trendy tools. From early on, you’re introduced to core areas like algorithms, programming, databases, operating systems, and software development processes, giving you a full picture of how software is designed and maintained in real-world systems.

One of the biggest strengths is the structured approach to the entire software lifecycle—requirements, design, development, testing, and quality assurance are all covered, which helps you think like an engineer rather than just a coder. The option to specialize in areas like e-service systems or robotics also adds some flexibility, especially if you want to explore applied or emerging fields.

The program leans more toward theory and fundamentals than quick, job-ready skills, which can feel slow at times—but it pays off in the long run. You’re not just learning frameworks that might become outdated; you’re building problem-solving skills that transfer across technologies. That said, it does mean you’ll need to put in extra effort outside of class (projects, internships, self-learning) to stay competitive in the job market.

Great practical learning and amazing community

What I liked most about this university was the focus on real-world projects. It wasn’t just about memorizing facts from a textbook; we actually got to apply what we learned. The student community is incredibly diverse and friendly, which made it easy to make friends and collaborate.
My only minor complaint is that some administrative processes (like enrollment and paperwork) can take a bit of time, but the quality of the education and the professors more than makes up for it.

    Exciting, Educating, Inspiring

VU-MIF has the best teachers in town. They have been encouraging, motivating and make difficult tasks easy to understand and perform. The rich history of research and accomplishments at Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics truly motivates and inspires you to work harder and attain your full potential.

Moreover, Student Coordinators have been incredibly supportive and helpful since admissions pursual till today. Care, love and respect for all are the fundamentals of Lithuanian Culture. I’m glad I made this choice, and my experience at Vilnius University has been really interesting so far.

I’m looking forward to more fun and advancement while being at VU-MIF.

Real Coding Experience at Vilnius University

Studying Software Engineering at Vilnius University has been a mix of excitement and hard work. Some courses are tough, especially when learning algorithms or working on big projects, but seeing your code actually run makes it all worth it. Professors are friendly and always willing to help, which makes a huge difference when you’re stuck. I’ve also loved the group projects and hackathons—they feel a lot like real tech work and teach you how to collaborate under pressure. It’s intense at times, but I feel like I’m really growing as a programmer every day.

    Main advantage and disadvantage

In general, my opinions are quite optimistic and I can recommend it to people who want to build a career in IT, Cybersecurity sector. The main advantage of university is paying high attention to practical subjects which gives hands-on experience to students, the drawbacks can be about the campus. Kaunas faculty is quite small, and there is not much things to do.

Vilnius University software engineer 1st year

As a first year student in Software engineering, the study programme and academic work load is pretty demanding. The Mathematic and Informatics faculty buildings aren’t really renovated, but the lecturers are friendly and proffessional. There is a lot of study material and expensive databases that you get access to. The student community is pretty active and involved in many student focused event organizing.
