The University of Technology, Jamaica, also known to most as “UTECH,” is a highly respected institution known for its practical, hands-on teaching combined with strong theoretical foundations, preparing students well for the workforce. With a diverse and dynamic student body, it offers more than 50 programs at certificate, diploma, and degree levels, all modeled on the English polytechnic system emphasizing flexibility, work-based learning, and professional connections. View moreMy overall experience with the Bachelor of Science in Computing programme has been a mix of positives and challenges. One of my main dislikes is the constant pressure to chase after lecturers for updates or clarifications regarding grades, which can be stressful and time-consuming. Communication could definitely be improved.
Another issue is the strict requirement of having your physical student ID to sit exams. Many students, myself included, sometimes forget it, and I believe there should be a more flexible system in place—such as accepting a scanned copy or digital version of the ID—especially in today’s tech-driven environment.
On the positive side, the programme covers a wide range of topics and offers exposure to both IT and computer science fundamentals. The lecturers are generally knowledgeable, and some classes are interactive and engaging. However, more practical, hands-on opportunities and better administrative organization would improve the overall experience.
I would recommend the university, but with the advice that incoming students should be prepared to stay on top of things and advocate for themselves often.
View moreMy time at UTECH was very interested and eventful. I had always wanted to attend this university from the start and held that passion and determination for a while until it was finally made a reality when I enrolled in 2009. I enjoyed every time spent, there were low and up days. The lecturers were very engaging and easy to liaise with, the experience was very practical and made learning much easier. I made some lasting connections as well, as I met new people through the various groups and it fostered some long standing relationships which are still active until now even after graduation in 2016. I would certainly recommend UTECH to anyone, even though they had some challenges with the administrative side of things, overall the experience worth worthwhile, forever UTECH in heart. 😁
View moreI found the university amazing and filled with many different people from different walks of life. I liked how many extra curriculum activities that were present and lectures who had a hands on teaching style. The lecture rooms were fun and if I was to recommend someone, I would tell the to brace for sn experience that will put a random smile on their face 1 to 10 years after thinking about the memories of things learned and done. And lastly soca parties were just devine.
View moreUniversity gives students the opportunity to learn with both a Practical and Theoretical approach. This is beneficial to the students as we later placed in the work environment. We are commended for our excellent work. What I don’t like about this university is their focus/ effort to improve student affairs. We do have a student union though that represents the student body well.
