What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Full of interesting students!

I’m currently enrolled in the bachelor programme in Computer Science and Engineering.
The Politecnico teach you a lot of fundamental engineerish things, mostly useful, sometimes completely useless.
The programme is structured enough well, with several interesting courses.
Politecnico, it’s not only a good university where to study, but also a good place where to meet people and take part to project and side-businesses (if you’ll eventually discover that is possibile to have a free time).
Highly recommended to take part to an association or groups, they are fundamental for the life of the students and they can give you a lot! Do not miss PoliTamTam, the students’ newsletter sent by email, you’ll be one of us! 🙂

MS in Computer Science and Engineering

In the current time, new breakthrough in technology seems endless, and new types of applications are rolled out almost instantaneously. I became interested in computer science when I realized I could start developing applications that attracts my attention like games and mobile applications, and it was an interest that continued to grow as I studied Software Engineering subject during my bachelor’s degree. I hope to become a programmer and software designer that can integrate the latest in the development of protocols in order to advance the field. Through the master’s program in computer science and Engineering from Politecnico Di Milano which is one of the best universities in the world, I will be able to acquire the skills that I will need to pursue my dream career in technology field. Apart from the impressive infrastructure and research facilities offered at the University of Politecnico Di Milano the courses like database system, Software Engineering, and Foundation of operation research really interested me. Its overall QS ranking is 137th in the world whereas in the Engineering field Politecnico Di Milano is at 20th number in the world. I will strongly recommend new students to undergo this program as the advancements in technology are growing instantaneously and expertise in computing enables you to solve complex, challenging problems. The computing field also offers many types of lucrative careers.

hi, bro I am going to take admission in the coming year. I want to know if the teaching is more theoretical or practical and one more question what about the placements and internships for computer science students.

Hi dear, studies here are more of theoretical based, like course work is more here. Secondly internships are quite good here universities as well as EU organizations offer internships on yearly basis.

A dynamic reality, with a lot of future growing possibilities

The University offers great job and growth opportunities. During the last years, many efforts have been made for the quality of extracurricular activities and the students life. It will take a few years more to enlarge the structures and to develop better strategies to improve the teaching quality (especially for the first two years) and to manage the growing number of people enrolled.

    Work hard, play hard

First thing that I noticed when I arrived at Politecnico was the sheer amount of work you need to do to get good grades. Second thing that I noticed was that it was really easy to get absorbed by it. Needless to say that that’s not the right approach in attending university, but, more or less, all universities are similar under this side, so where does Politecnico shines? Opportunities given to students are endless. You get job fairs, student associations, meetings with professors and experts, occasions to meet different cultures and exchange ideas. So, you got the point. You should exploit all opportunities Politecnico will offer you, and then you’ll get its best.

Good programs and excellent attention to students

Politecnico di Milano is a very good choice for anyone about to start studying in any of the Engineering fields. All of the programs are well-structured and leave choice to students on some aspects, most professors are qualified and most of them have many ongoing researches and publications regarding their field, overall there is a great attention towards students and their needs.

On the other hand, the first years are very harsh and draining and, more than often, long periods of intense studying lead to barely sufficient grades.

All of the structures are kept well and many services are offered to students, such as cheap lunch, discounts on copies and stationery and a wide selection of books to borrow from the library.
