Unrivalled Journey into Future Urbanism

I entered the one-year full-time Master of Science in Smart and Sustainable Cities at Trinity College Dublin with high expectations, and I am delighted to report that the reality has far exceeded them. This programme represents a unique marriage of disciplines, drawing on the expertise of leading scholars within Trinity’s Energy, Environment and Emerging Technologies Institute (E3). It truly harnesses the essence of an interdisciplinary approach, bridging the gap between urban geography, computer science, engineering and ecology to present a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in shaping the future of our cities.

The structure of the curriculum is as diverse as the subject matter, ranging from Urban Governance to Introduction to Machine Learning. Each module has been carefully crafted and designed to ensure that we, the students, are not only exposed to the theory, but also get hands-on experience in various facets of urban planning and sustainability. The ‘Smart Eco-Cities of the Future’ and ‘Urban Sustainability’ modules were particularly engaging and provided illuminating insights into how cities can develop in the 21st century, while ‘Geographical Information Systems (GIS)’ and ‘Introduction to Machine Learning’ provided an invaluable grounding in the technological aspects of smart city initiatives.

What sets Trinity’s MSc in Smart and Sustainable Cities apart is its emphasis on experiential learning. The programme’s field trip to a European city in Amsterdam was an enriching experience, exposing us to different social, political and economic contexts and deepening our understanding of the challenges of urbanisation and sustainability. This experience was further enriched by a compulsory industrial placement, which allowed us to apply our classroom knowledge in real-life scenarios. I found the process of securing my own placement both exciting and beneficial, and the support from the faculty was first class.

Balancing this wealth of knowledge and experience is the privilege of studying at Trinity College Dublin in the heart of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. The campus environment fostered a sense of community between us, the students, and the faculty who were always supportive and eager to share their wealth of knowledge.

As a graduate of this programme, I feel empowered and equipped to enter the vast and challenging job market related to smart and sustainable cities. The career opportunities on graduation are as varied as the modules, ranging from urban planning to smart city initiatives within private companies.

In summary, Trinity College Dublin’s MSc in Smart and Sustainable Cities offers a transformative educational experience that prepares its students to play an integral role in shaping the future of urban environments. Whether you’re a prospective student or a professional looking to further your education in this field, I wholeheartedly recommend this programme for its interdisciplinary approach, immersive learning experiences and commitment to preparing students for rewarding careers in smart and sustainable urban development.

Hello cheng!
Thank you very much for your comments on the Wisdom and Sustainable Development program at Trinity University. It is very helpful to me! I would like to ask you a few questions: Is the application competition for this program fierce? I am currently studying at Lanzhou University with a GPA of 3.5. If I apply for this program, how likely is it? This program is a one-year taught master’s program. Is it necessary to contact the applicant? Are you still developing abroad or returning to China?
Thank you for taking the time to read my reply. I look forward to your response.

Hi there Zhang, thanks a lot for your comment and I hope this message finds you well.

The postgraduate programme I finished is officially titled MSc in Smart and Sustainable Cities and I am not sure if it is indeed the programme you are interested in.

The SSC programme has become more competitive compared with the previous period when it was launched. However, the educational background in a Top university with upper-second-class grades is always quite competitive.

Nevertheless, I am unable to suggest the possibility of you being admitted as you may be compared with all other applicants, and I suggest you keep in mind that you may be required to attend an admission interview definitely in English to gain the offer of this programme.

Since it is a Taught Master’s, there is no need to contact a prospective supervisor before starting your application.

If you have any further enquiries, you may reply to me or contact Dr Lawton via [email protected].

Best wishes!
