Overall, my experience in the British Studies stream was very positive. The courses were engaging, well-structured, and offered valuable insights into British literature, culture, history, and society. I found the curriculum intellectually stimulating, and several professors demonstrated a strong command of their subjects while encouraging critical thinking and meaningful discussions. The program helped me strengthen my analytical, research, and communication skills, making it one of the most rewarding parts of my academic journey.
However, my experience with the Linguistics side of the department was considerably less positive. While the subject itself is fascinating and essential for understanding language, I felt that some teaching approaches made the courses more difficult than necessary. In several classes, explanations lacked clarity, student questions were not always addressed effectively, and the learning environment did not consistently encourage participation or engagement. At times, it seemed that the focus was not placed on ensuring students fully understood the material.
I believe the Linguistics program could benefit from more student-centered teaching methods more engaging classroom activities, and stronger communication between instructors and students. These improvements could make the learning experience more accessible and enjoyable for future students.
Despite these concerns, I would recommend the faculty, particularly for students interested in British Studies. The program provides a strong academic foundation in literature, culture, and history, and many professors are knowledgeable and supportive. The courses helped me develop valuable research, communication, and critical-thinking skills that continue to benefit me academically and professionally.
Overall, despite some shortcomings, the faculty provided a worthwhile educational experience. Students who are passionate about English studies and willing to take initiative in their learning can gain a great deal from the program, especially within the British Studies stream.

It is a nice, open university with thousands of students from all around the world. It is super easy to get accepted into the University of Debrecen, so if you like small town vibes in the heart of Europe, definitely give it a chance!

The University of Debrecen is a long-standing higher education institution with a diverse range of study fields and rich extracurricular engagement options in store for prospective students.

The city is well-connected to other large cities nearby and it also offers a variety of leisure time activities to virtually all kind of well-respectable interests.

Although until present day, theoretical aspects within the majority of educational programs and majors might overwhelmingly exceed the practical parts, one is offered a rather solid basis when it comes to obtaining the core knowledge to build on. When it comes to practical experiences, there will be a strong need for self-nurtured willpower to fill in the “crevices” of the individual curricula, when it comes to self-actualisation by practical knowledge-gaining.

The volunteering, interest-, and/or study-based student life & student club/NGO-scene is rather diverse, unless you only inform yourself from the official university channels. There is a great variety of decent and exciting social circles one can choose from – at and outside of the uni scene, in and around town.

Do your research with befriending with well-connected local Hungarian youngsters and you will see it for yourself. Do make an in-depth research before applying and moving to Debrecen in terms of all aspects you prioritise the most to have them all covered during your Debrecen life, and you will not go wrong with happily choosing our beloved city and university.

The gems and perks of what Debrecen and its university offer to you may not always be on all-public display from the beginning, but they are there.
