Depending on your interests in the curriculum, the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Democritus University of Thrace (which is located in Xanthi, not Komotini) can be proven quite a good choice for its students. Much like most universities, there are some professors that possess a great level of domain knowledge and connections to the market or other universities. On the other side, some parts of the curriculum are not taught by experts on the domain, rather by the people from the existing personnel that have the most relevant experience, which makes them less appealing and requires way more personal effort to actually learn more advanced parts. That may lead to some professors monopolizing interest in both attending courses and having as thesis supervisors.
In general the curriculum is quite broad; someone would really dislike EE&CS to not find something interesting for their taste. Also, on the 4th year all students have to choose their specialization, which is split in three categories: Electronics and Programming, Power and Energy and Telecommunications; all three have more specialized courses and the workload becomes bigger by that time. And of course, students need to write and defend their thesis in order to graduate.
A big minus of the university is the facilities it possesses, as most of the laboratory equipment is quite old or deprecated, which leads to having a diminished experience in the practical part of our studies. However, some exercises are pretty well built and actually make an impact to the average student.
Lastly, regarding student life, Xanthi is a small city, which limits the options for going out, but it is full of students, so there is no way that someone goes out and does not meet some people they know. The city has quite a friendly vibe and as a bonus, there are other cities nearby, which can be visited at a pretty low cost and they provide a change of scenery!
Yes, I would recommend it!!! My opinion of this university is very good. Τhe facilities are good, the teaching rooms an the laboratories are fully equipped. Also teachers are eager to make learning more enjoyable. I rated with 4 stars because I never saw the perfect at any university. But I don’t have any complaints from my university!
View moreI will be entering my 4th year of studies this year, the year where you choose your expertise. So far the field of study it wasn’t as I expected and the University lacks the variety of choices the ECE field should have. The reason for that is the lack of professors, assistants, and equipment. Furthermore, the city of Xanthi is not one you can say is suited for student life. It only houses 5 faculties of engineering so the variety of students is limited as well as the internationality due to the location of Xanthi. On the pros side, I have to say that the facilities are quite impressive comparing to other Universities in Greece. To sum up, my experience hasn’t been the best and DUTH wouldn’t be my first option for studies.
View moreAs this is my fourth year in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department, I can say that I have a fairly good experience with our university so far. Starting off, the initial curriculum is pretty solid, even though there are some courses that are not that useful in my opinion. Unfortunately, we do not have a good balance regarding professors and departmental courses (because it is not easy due to the extensive bureaucracy and the location of our Uni, as it is in the northeastern part of Greece) and that results in professors teaching courses that are not very relevant to their field of expertise. So, if you want to dig deeper into a topic, take the initiative yourself, it is the best way! Regarding professors, we have a nice mix of good, ok and not good ones, but that is to be expected in most universities. The best feature here is that because the faculty is relatively small, you can approach professors personally and most of them are open to that and don’t have any problem. Last but not least, student life here is ok, it is a totally subjective judgement though. You don’t have many options here in Xanthi (the whole polytechnic is in Xanthi), but there are some nice ones, most of them are not that expensive, and there are other cities that are close, and bus/train is really cheap.
