Lancaster University Ghana • Accra, Ghana
Lancaster University Ghana can be found in the suburban community of East Legon, just outside the Ghanaian capital, Accra. Students make up a considerable part of this suburb, and have been a main reason for its development and addition of cafés, restaurants, etc. The university’s foundation campus is near the A&C Square, while the undergraduate campus resides a short walk away within the A&C Square. Both locations offer modern facilities for both staff and students.
Lancaster University Ghana is a branch of Lancaster University in the UK, and its first in The Republic of Ghana. The institution aims to provide a ‘British university-level education locally’ to Ghanaian and African students alike, and to allow these students access to the university’s well-established ‘academic excellence in teaching and research.’ The endeavour was publicly announced in October 2013, and was approved by Ghana’s National Accreditation Board.
LUG is described as a ‘programme abroad’ by its headquarters in the UK, and this African branch is run by the UK base itself along with Transnational Academic Group Ghana Ltd. Students at LUG may study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas such as marketing, economics, business, management, politics, international relations, accounting and finance, law, computer science, and psychology. There is also an EMBA available at the university.
In addition to commonplace university facilities such as tutorial rooms and lecture theatres, LUG provides student support services for attendees who need counselling and/or academic help, a career zone to aid students with finding employment and internships, and, impressively, a suite for the university’s Executive MBA students.
LUG’s library boasts a significant online presence. Staff and students alike may use it to acquire notes from lectures, past exam papers, as well as lots of books which have been scanned into the database. This facility is also highly useful for research as academic journals can be viewed through this portal.
