at Shantou University

Shantou University stands out for its deeply student-centered approach, fostering an environment where individual needs are prioritized. Students benefit from excellent on-campus accommodation and modern learning facilities, all within a liberal academic atmosphere that encourages exploration and critical thinking.

Diverging from traditional exam-oriented models, STU aligns closely with international standards, actively promoting personalized development and holistic education. This is facilitated by a low student-to-faculty ratio, ensuring individual attention is readily accessible.

Campus life at STU is rich and engaging. Students have ample opportunities to explore diverse interests, from volunteering initiatives (which I participated in multiple times) to joining clubs like the literary society (where I contributed to the campus publication’s editorial work).

However, the classes, particularly within the Foreign Languages Department where I graduated, leans somewhat conservative. Despite the progressive overall ethos, the program retains numerous foundational courses like Comprehensive English and English Phonetics. This emphasis sometimes comes at the expense of offering deeper exploration into the department’s core disciplines—literature, linguistics, and translation studies—which could be more prominently featured for advanced students. Overall, STU provides a uniquely supportive and vibrant setting focused on nurturing well-rounded individuals.
