What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    Great School

My experience at UVIC was amazing. The location was awesome, as it was right by the beach, which is great as I love surfing. Also, the professors were all super helpful and understanding, and just wanted the best for me.

    Great School

UVIC has an amazing campus, which is absolutely beautiful. It is quite easy to go around the city. As well the bus system is very good and useful.

I enjoyed all my courses, and the professors made the classes really enjoyable, as they were super enthusiastic about what they were teaching. Also, once COVID became a problem, they handled the online courses pretty well. And once we returned to in-person, they had a good transition with a good combination of in-person and online classes.

Living on campus was a good experience and I met some of my lifelong friends from it. The food was pretty good for the most part and they had a lot of great activities in residence.

    Covid experience at Uvic

I was living in the dorms when I tested positive for COVID-19. I called the residence service people and was surprised by how calm and polite they were. I was panicking and feeling a little uneasy as I didn’t want others to get sick because of me. However, the staff responded very kindly and helped me feel more at ease. I have given an isolation room the keys to which were put in my mailbox. They also put a self-care package with some Tylenol, tissues, hand sanitizers, masks, chocolates, and a sweet get-well-soon note. I headed to the isolation center. The room was like a hotel room. It had a mini-fridge and a microwave. It helped me make some ramen when I felt hungry. The residence services got me in touch with the food department, which organized my food delivery. I had to fill out a form each day, ticking what exact food items I want for lunch, breakfast, and dinner. T The food would be sent from the MOD (UVic dining hall) and the money would be deducted from your one-card meal plan. Staff from the Wellness Centre got in touch with me regularly to make sure I’m doing okay. Overall, UVic’s staff and service helped me heal quickly. I felt at ease and was relieved to received the support and care that I did during this time.

    Residence Life

Residence at Uvic is pretty good. They offer multiple types of dorms: single rooms, double rooms, and one with bunk beds. They also have cluster houses, where four people live in an apartment style. you’re given fridges, gas stoves and each person living gets their individual rooms. Events happen throughout the semester. There are study groups, game nights, and other fun events to meet people and make friends. Your residence community leaders also organize small and big activities for your floor, where you can get together with your building mates.

The campus is safe. I’ve never felt unsafe walking back to my dorm even at late hours. There is also a campus safe walk facility, where a campus security officer can walk you back home if you feel unsafe. Particular buildings are open 24/7 (Clearihue). I often study late till night after the library closes. It feels safe and I get a lot of study done in empty classrooms 🙂

The food is something I’m not too fond of. There are restricted options for people with dietary restrictions. The veggie kitchen closes during weekends and when residents are less (Thanks Giving, Christmas), which leaves vegan/vegetarian people with lesser options. Food is overpriced and the quantity of main entrees is sometimes not enough at all. The bakery section is good though 🙂

    Campus resources -mental health

Uvic is big on mental health and provides students with many resources for their well-being. The Support Connect helpline is available 24/7 to support students in need. Someone will pick up your call and you can chat with them through call/zoom. Counselling services are available but it’s incredibly hard to get an appointment. Sometimes the waiting period can be as long as 2 months. I recommend looking for help off-campus if you’re looking for long-term therapy. Other than that most profs are understanding and are flexible with extensions if you need extra time. When times are too stressful, the Pet Café is a popular choice. You can chill with puppies and dogs and enjoy snacks to calm your mind.

Life of international student at UVic

I just love the campus and how beautiful it is throughout all the seasons. My profs are so amazing and helpful. Being an international student at uvic has not been busy but it’s been so fun and memorable for me! I didn’t realize that 2 years of my degree have passed by already and there are just 2 more to go before I graduate. Uvic is one of the best schools in BC, Canada and I am proud to be a student at UVic

    Psychology program at UVic

The Psychology program offered at UVic is quite great and I’ve had good experiences with most professors with the exception of a few outliers. The Psychology co-op programs are unhelpful in career development. It is difficult to find relevant co-op opportunities through UVic. However, UVic offers career advising which I personally found useful. Campus life and accommodation for first-year students are great however it is quite difficult to find accommodation off-campus given the housing crisis in Victoria.

    UVic

UVic is always bustling with people! Amongst the busyness of the library, collaborative classroom activities, and many student events, it’s incredibly easy to find friends. Most professors and TAs are friendly and willing to assist students outside the classroom. In addition, academic resources such as academic advising and help centres provide the extra support students need to succeed academically.

UVic’s resources go beyond academics. They are huge on mental health and support students through counselling, support groups, and a 24/7 helpline. Because UVic is a big school, getting appointments for counselling is tough. Sometimes wait times can be as long as 2 months. On the brighter side, UVic is beautifully surrounded by nature! With the beach 10 minutes away and many trails/hikes nearby, students can enjoy small getaways when stress is overwhelming. The pet café and Multifaith Centre are also great to take a break and destress! Another thing I love about UVic is that it’s an incredibly LGBTQ2IA friendly school. The community holds a positive attitude about its queer members, which encourages young individuals to explore their identities. Overall, UVic is a great school, with many opportunities for students to grow and explore their passions in and outside academia.
