What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    very theoretical approach

This is world class institution as most peoople know. That means that the facillities and the professors are extremely good. My major was psychology. I think that the program is quite general and doesn’t qulify you to work in the field which was a huge disapointment. However, as a a general program, it was quite good and I was satisfied with it. The campus is gorgeous and there are a ton of activities and clubs to join. However, the lck of subway/skytrain made it hard to get to. Also the housing in Vancouver, and especially around UBC make this a very unaffordable option for many. I was lucky in that I lived in the city with my mother and I could commute. But others who lived far away had a harder time with this.

Beautiful campus with strong research focus.

My experience at UBC as a Psychology major has been both rewarding and, at times, overwhelming. The academic environment is competitive, and professors expect a high level of independence. While that has pushed me to grow, it can also feel isolating—especially in large lectures where building personal connections with professors is challenging unless you actively seek them out.

One standout experience for me has been the opportunity to get involved in research as an undergraduate. UBC provides a lot of avenues for students to explore research, especially if you’re proactive. I’ve worked on lab studies and applied to research assistant positions that have helped clarify my career interests in clinical psychology and health tech.

Outside the classroom, the campus is absolutely beautiful—honestly one of the biggest perks. Walking through the trails or watching the sunset at Wreck Beach never gets old. However, the size of the university can make it difficult to find community at first, and you really have to put yourself out there to meet people and stay grounded.

If you’re self-driven and ready to take initiative, UBC can be an incredible place to grow both personally and academically. But be prepared to advocate for yourself—resources are there, but you often have to dig to find them.

    The Sense of Community

Although I am only two years in to my program, I have grown really fond of my university. The campus is incredibly beautiful and well-maintained, balancing the natural environment, and the infrastructure. It encourages a sense of community, by having a very clearly laid out campus. It feels like a little town, where everyone is genuinely motivated and interested to learn. I have been lucky enough to have passionate professors, who have all created an environment where I’m comfortable to learn and make mistakes. I feel comfortable in the student body, and feel well represented. Overall, I am proud to study here.

    UBC Okanagan - A Tight-Knit Community

I came to the University of British Columbia – Okanagan (UBCO) campus in 2021. A little bit of context about me: I have moved around my whole life. It’s been hard, but finding that sense of community has helped me fit in. I also wanted to find that community during my undergraduate degree, which is why UBCO caught my eye. It had all the great benefits of a large university campus (facilities, outstanding professors, great clubs) but was in a smaller environment. This made it so much easier for me to make friends and connect with my professors, and as a psychology student, I even did a lot of research in my undergraduate degree. For example, I am involved in 3 research labs, and I am completing my honours thesis right now! Being in the beautiful city of Kelowna is also amazing because there is so much to do around town, and you are also surrounded by nature. My top tip: visit Parlour Ice Cream if you are coming to Kelowna; it’s the best place ever!!
I would also highly recommend students live on residence in their first year. It is guaranteed for first-year students as long as you apply by May 1st, and it’s where I could participate in many events such as a pop-up cat cafe, hot chocolate nights, Just Dance nights, and so many more! I also made my friends for life on residence, and I am now even a Residence Advisor!
In terms of academics, I think the best thing about Psychology professors is that they are experts in their own research fields and are excellent at teaching. Each professor is unique; getting to know each of them is a joy and makes the learning experience so much better.
If you are thinking about coming to UBCO, I would recommend it because it is a place that values community, high-quality education, and acceptance.

    Positive Review: Psychology Major

As a recent graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Psychology program, I am thrilled to share my overwhelmingly positive experience. UBC’s Psychology program is truly exceptional, and I am proud to provide my heartfelt endorsement.

The faculty at UBC’s Psychology department is a group of dedicated and knowledgeable experts who are not only passionate about their subject but also deeply committed to their students’ success. Their teaching methods are engaging and enlightening, and they foster an environment that encourages critical thinking and active participation. I always felt supported by my professors, who were not only mentors but also approachable and understanding individuals.

The curriculum is thoughtfully structured to cover a wide spectrum of psychological topics, ensuring that students gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject

UBC is a world renowned educational institution on the beautiful west coast of Canada. It is home to some of the leading fields in the world. As a psychology and neuroscience student, I am given the opportunity to learn with some incredible professors and professionals. This has given me opportunities that I likely would not have gotten at a smaller, less renowned institution.

UBC: The Best Decision I've Made

The University of British Columbia is an outstanding place to learn and grow. The environment itself nurtures dedicated, intelligent and change-making students. Even as a first-year student, I have gotten the chance to speak with professors, learn about academic opportunities, meet with career coaches and network with professionals. The copious amount of opportunities allows students to explore their interests and pursue their dreams. There are many beautiful places to study, and like-minded folks to build life-long friendships with. With mountains in your backyard and lectures that transform the way you think, coming to UBC was the best decision I have made.

    abundant options

even though there are many courses to choose from, choosing only what you want to learn might result in graduating with too little knowledge of a certain field. However, the programme itself is really good, as there are al to of interesting options.

Romanticize your University Experience at UBC

Picture this; Bon Iver is playing in your headphones, you have a hot peppermint tea in your hands, the light rain pushes you to whip out that cool jacket you have been wanting to wear. Congratulations! You have made it, you are now a west coast indie kid. UBC has a stunning campus, and speaking from a commuter student- it is one of the biggest motivators that gets my butt to class. The education is top tier and quite competitive, which lends itself to be one of the top schools in Canada but, it’s not just all about academics. Whether you are a dark academia type, romantic, or a beach bum- UBC has got you covered while also maintaining an elite GPA.
