What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    Psychology at McGill

McGill’s psychology program is incredibly saturated, so be prepared for extremely full classes and limited opportunities to form close relationships with professors. Many instructors are deeply knowledgeable about their own research, but are often teaching courses outside their specialty, which can feel less relevant. The honors program is highly competitive, with an intense and sometimes unrealistic workload. Success requires working extremely hard, mostly through cramming and memorization, and exams are often multiple choice, which means learning tends to be fairly surface-level.

That said, the campus culture is vibrant, with a strong sense of community, and the university’s reputation opens doors far beyond graduation. Overall, it’s a program that demands effort but offers great prestige and a lively academic environment.

I think the psychology program at McGill is one of the best in Canada. It has honed my understanding of human behavior and has also helped hone my skills in marketing when it comes to consumer behavior.

International Crowd in A Great City

McGill is located in one of the best cities in the world which gives you a lot of opportunities in and outside of the university. However, there are a lot of students in the undergraduate program meaning that it is harder to build connections with professors and you will need to advocate for yourself and your needs.

I chose McGill for its great international reputation and the fact that it is a research-intensive institution. I would have first-hand experience and a more informed review of the university when I start in the fall.

    Work-Life Balance

I could not be happier with my experience at McGill University. Among so many positive factors contributing to my years here, the work-life balance really stood out to me. At McGill, the community is the most hard-working and determined group I have been in, while also having the most fun. It is inspiring and motivating to be surrounded by students who have the grit and determination to get their work done with a very goal-oriented mindset, thinking about their future. Students prioritize their school work and grades, while allowing time for relaxation, time with friends, socializing, etc. In general, students study as much/hard as they can during the days, to ensure there is free time on weekends/nights to have fun, party, etc.

connecting with alumni and involvement in clubs

McGill is not one of the most diverse university’s and for that, I wish there were more opportunities for me to connect with other alumni and students who are going down the same academic path as I am. However, I am enjoying my current experience and involvement in the clubs I am currently in and the diversity within these clubs themselves.

    McGill University Undergraduate Review

My experience at McGill University was pleasant overall. I enjoyed the environment on and off campus and I felt that the quality of education was up to par with what you would expect. It is a very competitive environment, so if thrive and feel motivated in a cut throat environment then it is a good fit for you. Some downsides were that the lectures were huge, due to the large student population, and therefore you really had to go out of your way to receive one-on-one time with both professors and advisors. This meant that it was hard to receive direct support if you were struggling with a specific class or were having a hard time adjusting to university life.

    It’s good!

The professors are accommodating when it comes to extensions for assignments depending on the classes you take. There is a competitive vibe within the students, but we are in the same boat so we do help out eachother. In general, McGill is a great university that provided me with plenty of opportunities for my future. They inteoduced me to my internships and I’ll always be grateful for that. The professors are really nice and some of them are kind enough to give you a recommendation letter even if you were in their large classes where it’s hard to recognize the students due to number.

    Interesting couses

Even though it is only my first year here, I am very impressed with the wide variety of courses that McGill offers. The courses I am taking now are all engaging and very interesting in very different ways. If you have good time management skills and an interest in the subjects you are taking it is very easy to succeed! It is a challenging school, but I am loving it so far.
