My past three years as a Biology student at Western University have offered a rare balance of academic intensity and genuine well-being. Courses like Neuroanatomy, Genetics, and Cell Biology are challenging and require strong discipline, but the environment helps you rise to expectations rather than feel burnt out.

Western’s culture prioritizes balance: weekday academic focus paired with opportunities to enjoy campus life on weekends. Student-led initiatives like late-night breakfasts during finals, study sessions in beautiful buildings, and social events make the campus feel alive and supportive.

What set Western apart for me was its compassion. When I needed to travel last-minute to India during a major lab week, the administration offered compassionate consideration that let me prioritize family without hurting my grades. That experience made me feel supported as a person, not just a student. If you want a university that challenges you intellectually while letting you maintain a life outside the classroom, Western strikes that balance perfectly.

I enjoy how the university provides a great balance of fun and education. The class sizes are good and the professors are well-educated. Most continue to help students after class times. The school also provides a lot of fun activities for the students to do.

Western has some of the best chemistry, physics and biology labs in Canada. As some who specialized in Genetics, I had the opportunity to use and participate in many lab exercises and research projects. The professional community at Western has allowed for greater connections in my field with a great alumni community. I would also encourage other to join clubs and other extracurricular activities as the people you meet might become friends for the rest of your life!

The biology program at UWO allows students to gain a broad range of knowledge while giving students the opportunity to take courses of specific interest to them. 6 second-year level courses are mandatory to the program, allowing students to have many flexible slots on their timetables. This is great because students have a less rigid schedule where they can focus on more courses they are specifically interested in. Additionally, the professors are really great. They are supportive and very entertaining. They have good class presentations and make the class content relevant to recent scientific discoveries. I really enjoy the biology program at UWO, and believe it is great for students who want a good foundation in the biological sciences.
