The University of Botswana (UB) is the largest and oldest public university in the country, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields such as business, education, health sciences, engineering, and social sciences. It is well-regarded for its research contributions in areas relevant to Botswana’s development, such as HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability, and indigenous knowledge. However, like many institutions in developing contexts, it faces challenges including limited resources, occasional overcrowding in popular programs, and the need for more international exposure and industry partnerships. To strengthen its position, UB could expand collaborations with global universities, increase investment in digital learning technologies, and enhance student support services such as career guidance and entrepreneurship training, ensuring graduates are better prepared for the competitive job market.

As a current student at UB, I can say it’s a solid choice if you’re looking for affordable, quality education that’s relevant to Botswana and the region. The campus is well-equipped with modern lecture halls, a great library, and decent Wi-Fi in most areas. Lecturers are knowledgeable, and the programs—especially in business, health, education, and engineering—are practical and rooted in real-world challenges.

UB is not perfect. Admin can be slow at times, and it’s not as globally recognized as top universities abroad. But if you’re serious about your studies and want to make a difference locally, this is a great place to start. Plus, being surrounded by students from across Botswana and neighboring countries makes the experience richer.

I wanted to study Software Engineering as a discipline by itself. Unfortunately while it was offered, it was only a specialisation available in Year 3, semester 5.

The course does generally deliver with modules on Programming, Discrete Maths, standard Math, Research and Communication, English and scientific research standards.

Of course, this felt unnecessary considering what I wanted to learn. The experience was not in vain however, as I got to learn some fun math-related stuff I enjoyed.

The university had great facilities, including internet, stadium, library, labs and other resources that helped a ton.

Though the administrative process that one has to deal with on a bi-yearly basis is unintuitive, frustrating, and leaves a lot to be desired in that regard, I can happily say that the University of Botswana goes a great distance to equip its students with all the skills they would need to excel in their studies and their future.

Education is generally is sufficient except for research. It is not well explained and not enough practice is given for students to really grasp it.

Otherwise, it has great facilities for your course.

It is an amazing school and it is improving its resources yearly. I like that it offers hands on lessons on different courses offered. I dislike that it can be costly for some modules offered especially in the science faculty. Besides the costly part, I would recommend it.
