The University of Botswana (UB) is the largest and oldest public university in the country, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields such as business, education, health sciences, engineering, and social sciences. It is well-regarded for its research contributions in areas relevant to Botswana’s development, such as HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability, and indigenous knowledge. However, like many institutions in developing contexts, it faces challenges including limited resources, occasional overcrowding in popular programs, and the need for more international exposure and industry partnerships. To strengthen its position, UB could expand collaborations with global universities, increase investment in digital learning technologies, and enhance student support services such as career guidance and entrepreneurship training, ensuring graduates are better prepared for the competitive job market.

The university offers a solid academic foundation with dedicated lecturers and a well-structured programme. I particularly appreciated the access to learning resources and the supportive environment for students. However, administrative delays and communication issues can be frustrating at times. Despite that, I would still recommend the university to others, especially for those pursuing science-based programmes. The challenges are manageable, and the overall experience is rewarding if you stay focused.

The University of Botswana boasts modern, top-tier buildings and well-equipped classrooms that create conducive learning environment. Most lecturers demonstrate a strong commitment to their work, delivering quality instruction and engaging students effectively.

However, given the large student population of over 15,000, the student-to-lecturer ratio can be quite high. This often results in classes being held in large auditoriums, which limits personal interaction between students and faculty. As a result, students seeking clarification or additional guidance may find it challenging to connect directly with their lecturers and often rely on tutors for support.

Overall, the university offers a high standard of facilities and dedicated teaching staff, but the large class sizes can pose a challenge for personalized learning.

The university made the program such that from 3rd year up until graduation we work full time in the hospital. The only time we get to class is if we are writing exams. I find this to be very helpful provided that we are working with people’s lives we don’t learn work when we are actual doctors which can put people at risk but rather in school when we are still under supervision.
