Dhaka University: Pride of a Nation

As a student of Dhaka University, I can confidently say that this institution is not just a university — it’s an experience that shapes who you are. It’s a place filled with history, diversity, and opportunities, but like any institution, it has its strengths and challenges.

    👍 What I Like

Rich History & Legacy: Studying here makes me feel connected to Bangladesh’s freedom struggles, especially the Language Movement and Liberation War.

Beautiful Campus: The blend of old colonial-style buildings, open green spaces, and iconic landmarks like Curzon Hall makes everyday life feel inspiring.

Vibrant Student Life: The campus is always alive with cultural activities, debates, clubs, and social movements. There’s never a dull moment.

Affordable Education: Compared to private universities, the cost here is very low, which makes quality education accessible to everyone.

Sense of Community: Students come from all over the country, which creates a diverse and lively atmosphere.

    👎 What I Dislike

Overcrowding: With such a huge number of students, classrooms and facilities can feel overcrowded.

Administrative Delays: Some processes (admissions, exams, results) are slow and could be more efficient.

Political Influence: Student politics, while historically significant, sometimes disrupt academic life.

Limited Modern Facilities: Though the campus is beautiful, many facilities (labs, classrooms, libraries) need upgrades to meet modern standards.

    ✅ Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely. Despite the challenges, Dhaka University remains a place of pride and learning. If you want to study in an institution that combines academic opportunities with cultural and historical significance, this is the right place. It may not be perfect, but it will give you experiences and lessons that last a lifetime.

    The Oxford of the East

The University of Dhaka (DU) isn’t just an academic institution; it’s a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s history, culture, and intellectual identity. To study here is to walk through living history. Its reputation as the “Oxford of the East” is well-earned, primarily due to its rigorous academic environment in many departments and a faculty that includes some of the nation’s sharpest minds. The sheer prestige of a DU certificate opens doors and commands respect throughout the country.

Life at DU is incredibly vibrant and formative. The campus is a melting pot of ideas, arts, and politics. The chatter at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), the intellectual debates in the central library, and the festive atmosphere during Pohela Boishakh at Charukola (Faculty of Fine Arts) are experiences that shape you far beyond the classroom. The powerful alumni network is another unparalleled asset, providing a lifelong community and professional leverage.

However, the university is not without its significant challenges. The most prominent issue is the infamous “session jam,” or academic delay, which can postpone graduation. While improving, it remains a concern. Furthermore, the institution struggles with its massive student population, leading to overcrowded classrooms and residential halls. The infrastructure, though historic and beautiful, is aging and often strained. Student politics, while a part of DU’s legacy of activism, can sometimes disrupt academic life and create a volatile environment.

Ultimately, studying at the University of Dhaka is a test of resilience as much as it is of intellect. It teaches you to be resourceful, patient, and competitive. You don’t just leave with a degree; you leave with an identity, a deep-seated sense of national pride, and an invaluable network. It’s an experience that forges you.
