What Is a Medicine Degree?

Saving someone’s life is perhaps one of the most remarkable feelings in the world. Even so, not so many of us have the chance to experience this. It takes passion, a strong personality and years of study to be able to work in the medical field.

Pursuing a Medical degree is not only challenging and demanding but also competitive. Medical degrees are shaped for people who show high motivation and commitment as well as interest for sciences.

Throughout a Medicine degree, candidates are equipped with a wide range of competences, from practical abilities required for specialized hands-on tasks to communication skills needed to interact with the patients. Thus, any medical students will be able to take a simple blood sample as well as perform a complex surgical procedure.

Benefits of a Medical Degree

Undoubtedly, medicine is one of the most vital fields of work – therefore there will always be a high demand of workforce needed. The employment rate for a medical graduate student is of 90%.

Due to its diverse branches, graduates from a Medical course have a variety of career choices, according to their expertise. Nursing, radiology, anaesthetics are just some of the many specialities offered in this field. Regardless of the speciality, the most important aspect needed to be taken into consideration is that medical professionals are well-respected and well-paid all over the world.

Additionally, graduates possess a series of transferable skills, such as logical reasoning, critical appraisal, listening, written and oral communication and many others. These assets are sought and highly valuable in most fields of work.

Medical Degree Structure

Medical courses are usually a six-year commitment, but it can vary according to the university. Most of the modern universities integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the academic curriculum, while traditional institutions divide them into preclinical and clinical education.

Most schools understand the importance of practical knowledge, especially in this field, therefore they encourage the students to observe professional healthcare practitioners. Another way to gain practical experience is to go to different clinics and receive specialised training, followed by actual practical work.

No matter the practices of the university, always keep in mind that medical courses are structured differently in every country. Therefore, medical qualifications gained in one country are not necessarily recognised in another country.

Low fees, a lot of improvements can be made

The University of Medicine Tirana is a public institution that offers medical education and training in Tirana, Albania. It possesses several commendable aspects while also leaving room for improvement. In this review, I will explore its low fees, scholarships for excellent students, and the potential for enhancing the campus and laboratories.

One of the standout features of the University of Medicine Tirana is its low fees that are about 400 euros annually for students with an average grade below 6 and half of it for students with an average grade from 6 to 9. As for students with an average grade of 9 to 10 there are no fees. Affordability is a crucial factor for many students seeking higher education, especially in the medical field, which often incurs substantial costs. The university’s commitment to providing accessible education by maintaining reasonable fees is commendable. This aspect allows aspiring medical professionals to pursue their dreams without facing significant financial burdens.

Another positive aspect worth highlighting is the university’s provision of scholarships for excellent students. The government offers a monthly stipend of about 450 euros for excellent students that commit to work in Albanian piblic healthcare for at least 3 years after graduation. Scholarships serve as a vital means of recognizing and rewarding academic achievement and potential. By offering scholarships for excellent students, the University of Medicine Tirana encourages and supports them in their pursuit of medical education. This initiative not only attracts talented individuals but also fosters a competitive and intellectually stimulating environment within the university.

However, while the University of Medicine Tirana has its strengths, there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of the campus and laboratories. Enhancing the campus infrastructure can significantly contribute to creating an environment conducive to learning and personal growth. Investments in modern facilities, well-equipped libraries, student recreational areas, and comfortable study spaces can elevate the overall student experience.

Likewise, focusing on upgrading the laboratories can greatly enhance the quality of education at the university. Cutting-edge equipment and advanced technologies are indispensable in the medical field, where practical training plays a crucial role. By investing in state-of-the-art laboratories, the University of Medicine Tirana can ensure that its students have access to the latest tools and resources, enabling them to gain hands-on experience and develop the necessary skills required in their future medical careers.

In conclusion, the University of Medicine Tirana presents a compelling option for those aspiring to pursue a medical education in Albania. Its low fees make it an affordable choice, and the availability of scholarships for excellent students is a commendable initiative. While the campus and laboratories have room for improvement, investments in these areas can elevate the overall educational experience for students. With a continued focus on enhancing its facilities, the University of Medicine Tirana has the potential to become an even more appealing institution for aspiring medical professionals.

    Good overall, some improvements needed

The program includes theoretical studies as well as practical work. The first 3 years are pre-med and include studying different subjects mostly about general medical practices. The 4th, 5th, and 6th years include rotations and more practical studies in every specific field of medicine, such as cardiology, pneumology, paediatrics, anaesthesia, etc. The professors are good and their teaching is thorough, but they are also very demanding. However, the books that are used need to be updated. Furthermore, the exam methods need to be improved.

    More practise

Regarding the curriculum and the classes, they lack the practice part and the close observation of human anatomy and medical procedures and the direct communication and observation of the patient which I think is very important.

A good option to study medicine

I like the theory aspect of my general medicine program, most of the professors are well informed and capable of giving us the information so we can be well-rounded doctors. I don’t like the fact that the practical part of our degree is still lacking in some subjects due to a lack of material and human resources and I think the way exams are taken and evaluated could be revised and improved. I would recommend this school to everyone who has a passion for medicine. The student life is fine and the career prospects are quite good in my country due to the lack of doctors, there is just a lack of resources offered to develop our practical skills. My experience for most of the time has been quite good until now.

    Great hospital practice!

I really like how the program is put together and subjects are learned together so that they make sense. There is a lot of room for improvements such as better condition classrooms and lecture classes.
The practice in the hospital is great, doctors are very nice and aim to help anyone if you just kindly ask.
The staff is good, most of the time are available for you.
Classmates are amazing, everyone gets on well with each other and helps each other if needed.

    Professors, Books

The teachers are good. The only thing that needs improvement are books some need to be updated and probably we need more time to spend at the hospital with the patients and to discuss more with the professor about that.

    Great medical studies

The programme really prepares the students for the general medical field. It offers good and thorough medical teaching as well as practical work. The professors and doctors are very detail-oriented and hold high expectations. However, I dislike the exam methods and evaluations.
