07/04/2026

When it comes to studying in Europe, there are the usual places for students to consider: the UK, the Netherlands, Germany… But have you thought about Greece? Beyond the postcard-perfect coastlines and legendary food, when you study in Greece, you’ll access internationally-ranked education at a much lower cost than in other European countries.

EDUopinions has collected over 700 university reviews from students in Greece, and their stories explain why this Mediterranean destination could be a great option for your studies.

Here’s why it deserves a serious spot on your shortlist.

Why should you study in Greece?

Thessaloniki

1. Internationally recognised degrees at a fraction of the cost

Greek universities are tuition-free for EU students, while non-EU students typically pay significantly lower fees than they would in countries like the UK, Ireland, or the Netherlands. Private universities in Greece also tend to offer more affordable tuition than their Western European equivalents.

However, it’s not as if you’re studying a discounted degree. Greek universities are fully accredited, and many are internationally recognised for their research output – particularly in fields such as mathematics, engineering, medicine, and environmental science. For example, Times Higher Education ranks six Greek universities among the top 1000 in the world. This includes universities in the country’s capital, such as Harokopio University of Athens, and institutions in bright holiday destinations, such as the University of Crete, which has campuses in the historic cities of Rethymno and Heraklion.

High quality education

The faculty is committed to delivering a high-quality education, and their support has been invaluable to me. The academic programs are challenging, but there are ample opportunities for growth and learning. The beautiful campus provides numerous resources for students to excel both academically and socially. The Harokopio University atmosphere fosters a strong sense of community and pride.

Poor Greek infrastructure, Great Professors

The LL.M. program at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens benefits from a strong academic staff, with most professors being highly knowledgeable and committed to their fields. The quality of teaching is generally very good. However, the infrastructure is a significant weakness, with some classrooms lacking proper maintenance, including issues with heating and windows. The university does not offer realistic accommodation options, meaning students usually rely on private rentals. Additionally, there is no unified campus, as classes are spread across nearby buildings within the city.

2. Learning inside and outside the classroom

Greece is the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, the Olympic Games, and much of the scientific thinking that still underpins modern disciplines today. Whether you plan on studying political theory, medicine, literature, or architecture, to do so in a country that has paved the way in your respective discipline is a unique experience.

Studying in Greece is also an intensive cultural experience. If you’re studying in Athens, on your way to and from class, you’ll encounter historic sights such as the Parthenon, the ancient Agora, and the Theatre of Dionysus – and not as a tourist either, but as a local. Regardless of your field of study, the opportunity to immerse yourself in a country with thousands of years of vibrant history is surely inspiring.

idyllic Mediterranean setting

Located on Corfu, the university combines academic rigor with an idyllic Mediterranean setting. I experienced a curriculum that pushed me to grow intellectually. Professors were supportive and highly knowledgeable, offering deep insights into language, culture, and communication. What makes Ionian University unique is its specialization in fields like digital heritage, translation studies, and music. The university also encourages international collaboration, giving students the chance to participate in projects that extend learning beyond the classroom. Research resources, including rich archives, were invaluable to my academic development. The location adds unmatched charm—Corfu’s Venetian architecture, lively cultural scene, and warm local community make life here unforgettable. However, being on an island presents challenges, like limited infrastructure and transportation. Despite these, Ionian University is perfect for students seeking academic depth in a stunning, inspiring environment.

3. budget-friendly student lifestyle

Beyond affordable tuition fees, the general cost of living in Greece is significantly lower than in other Mediterranean countries, even in the biggest cities like Athens. Compared to another popular student city in an affordable country for studying, Bologna, Italy, restaurants in Athens are about 17% cheaper, and the overall cost of living 20% cheaper.

When you study in Greece, you’ll also partake in a Mediterranean lifestyle that values work-life balance and time off. Plus, you’ll enjoy over 300 days of sunshine per year, some of the most walkable city centres in Europe in Athens, and a food culture built around fresh, local food.

Theoretical variety, lack of practice

Psychology department in my university offers courses from a variety of theoretical branches and approaches. An unfortunate thing is that there are not enough courses about clinical psychology or enough opportunities for practice. The facilities are okay, but there is still a lack of rooms and a few technical issues such as air conditioning. Most professors are nice and helpful. Campus life can be really fun, since there are a lot of student groups related to cinema, theater, technology, photography etc, which you can join for free, as well as many other student events.

Beautiful country to study

Formally known as (TEI) is now Hellenic Mediterranean University. What sets the Hellenic Mediterranean University apart is its emphasis on real-world learning. My business program includes internships and projects with local businesses, which have been incredibly valuable in gaining practical experience. The campus is lively, with a friendly student community that makes it easy to feel at home. Crete itself adds to the charm—studying with a view of the sea is something I’ll never forget! However, I do think there’s room for improvement in library resources and study spaces. That said, the overall academic quality and lifestyle make it a university worth considering.

4. A welcoming, growing international student community

While Greece remains one of the European countries with the smallest share of foreign students, it has been attracting more international students in recent years. The growth in the international population, in addition to an already multicultural and multi-ethnic community in cities like Athens, adds another unique and valuable aspect to your student experience. Additionally, many Greek universities now offer a substantial number of programmes in English, particularly at the postgraduate level.

Greeks themselves are famously hospitable – philoxenia (love of strangers) is a concept deeply rooted in the culture – and most young Greeks speak excellent English, so adapting to daily life in the country may be less daunting than in other European destinations. You’ll find international student associations, welcome programmes, and a social scene that makes it genuinely easy to find new friends.

Incredible educational experience!

Studying at the American College of Greece has been an incredible experience. The professors here are not only highly knowledgeable in their fields but also approachable and supportive as they are genuinely invested in helping students succeed.
The MA in Advertising Communications is well-structured, and offers a great balance between theoretical learning and practical applications. I’ve had the opportunity to engage in meaningful projects, and insightful discussions that have deepened my understanding of key concepts.
Beyond academics, the campus environment is positive, inclusive, and filled with opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. There’s a real sense of community, with plenty of events, clubs, and initiatives to get involved in.
I highly recommend Deree to anyone looking for an enriching, supportive, and engaging educational experience. It’s truly a place where you can thrive.

Engaging classes

My time at the University of the Peloponnese is rewarding. Classes are interactive and engaging, focusing on case studies, simulations, and practical projects. Professors were highly experienced, providing not only academic knowledge but also insights into professional fields.
The university’s location in the Peloponnese adds another layer to its appeal. Kalamata is a vibrant city with a mix of traditional Greek culture and modern amenities, surrounded by breathtaking beaches and mountains. It’s the perfect place for students who appreciate a peaceful yet enriching environment. While the university excels in fostering community ties and promoting sustainability, its infrastructure could use improvements, especially in libraries and labs. Nevertheless, the administration’s focus on growth and collaboration with European institutions is evident. This is an excellent choice for students seeking meaningful academics in a historic yet forward-thinking setting.

My experience at the university was largely positive. The faculty were genuinely invested in their students’ success. The university’s location is convenient, and the course material was, for the most part, modern and relevant. Athens University of Economics and Business

From 2017 to 2025, the University has made significant improvements that addressed many of the negative experiences of the past. The campus environment has become much more welcoming, with cleaner surroundings and the removal of unregulated street markets nearby.
The professors are one of the University’s greatest strengths. They teach using modern, real-world examples and often provide their own free books, e-books, and other resources to help students succeed. The University also uses an Electronic Class (E-Class) platform, where students can find announcements, assignment details, and schedule updates.
For support and community, both professors and students are active in online groups such as Discord, where they offer academic help, guidance, and opportunities to connect socially.
Accessibility is another advantage, as the campus is only a 10-minute walk from Viktoria Metro station and is well served by bus routes. In addition, the University offers free accommodation and meals on campus to students who meet the eligibility criteria, making it an excellent choice for those seeking financial support.

High level of education

My department was social science and there were great teachers with wide knowledge. Most importantly thought we had the chance to have subjects from other departments also. For example i was a student of sociology but i was doing also subjects from phycology or from education or economics. And so i got a variety of knowledge. Which i think that for my department was mandatory. The department that i was in was in Rethymnon. It had a great view it was not a regular big building but it had small ones and it made it beautiful. It had the most organised and big library that i have ever seen in a university so far. Overall it is totally worth it to study there.

The University of Crete offers a unique academic experience, blending rigorous coursework with a strong cultural and social environment. I study maths, and the program’s structure encourages critical thinking and creativity. The professors are passionate and always open to discussions, making classes engaging. The campus, surrounded by Crete’s natural beauty, provides a peaceful setting for studying and reflection. What I’ve appreciated most is the sense of community among students—there’s always someone ready to help or collaborate. While the public transport system could be better, the university’s vibrant culture and academic quality make it a great choice.

Mindset changer

Embarking on the MSc program was a delightful and enriching journey that exceeded my expectations in several areas. The course content was thoughtfully designed, providing a broad and insightful understanding of the subject matter. The curriculum challenged me intellectually, expanded my knowledge, and opened my mind to new concepts and perspectives that I had not previously considered.

One of the standout aspects of the program was the caliber of professors. They were not only experts in their fields but also passionate educators who genuinely cared about their students’ learning experiences. Their mentorship and guidance were instrumental in shaping my academic journey, and I appreciated the opportunity to build strong relationships with them. The networking opportunities with professors were excellent, allowing for rich academic exchanges and professional connections that I believe will be valuable throughout my career.

However, when it comes to networking with fellow classmates, the program fell short of my expectations. While I met some interesting peers, I found that the structure of the course did not encourage as much collaboration and camaraderie among students as I had hoped. Strengthening this aspect could significantly enhance the learning experience by fostering a more supportive and interactive community.

Another area where the program could improve is its practical application. While the theoretical knowledge was robust, I missed opportunities for hands-on experience that would bring the concepts to life. Specifically, the inclusion of visits to international and Greek companies would have been a valuable addition. Observing real-world operations and engaging with industry professionals would provide practical insights and bridge the gap between theory and practice.

1. The American College of Greece (overall rating 4.39/5)

American College of Greece

Our number one best place to study in Greece is another Athens-based institution, the American College of Greece (which is also home to Alba Graduate Business School). ACG is the oldest American-accredited college in Europe and the largest private college in Greece, and its history is part of the reason for its genuinely international atmosphere. There are over 1,000 international students enrolled in the school’s undergraduate and graduate programmes, and across the university, students hail from 95 countries and regions.

ACG offers a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in English, including business administration (at Alba), economics, computer science, engineering, and the arts and sciences. It was the first international American institution to receive accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the school’s undergraduate degrees are accredited by the UK’s The Open University. For students who want an American-style education with the unmistakable backdrop of Athens, ACG is hard to beat.
