How IE University’s Master in Management Prepares Students For Startup Life

28/10/2025

Some would say entrepreneurs are born, not made, but today’s most innovative business schools are challenging this idea. Now, it’s common for schools to offer entrepreneurship-focused degrees that give students the skills to thrive in the startup world – like the Master in Management at IE University.

IE University’s MiM has earned impressive global recognition, ranking 7th worldwide in the QS 2026 rankings and earning triple accreditation – a feat achieved by only 1% of business schools worldwide. The school’s dedication to entrepreneurship is proven: 30% of IE University graduates become entrepreneurs at some point in their careers.

Read on to find out how the programme immerses students into the world of entrepreneurship, from company visits to practical learning.

Entrepreneurship Concentration

To start with, Master’s in Management students at IE University can choose a dedicated concentration in Entrepreneurship & Corporate Innovation. This concentration explores diverse topics such as social entrepreneurship, financial accounting for startups, and corporate entrepreneurship, and emphasises practical, hands-on learning that mirrors the real startup experience.

Throughout the programme, students will learn how to identify market opportunities, validate business models, and secure funding. However, there’s also a strong focus on developing the necessary leadership skills to guide a startup or venture capital firm to success.

Finally, to cap off their learning experience, students participate in a hands-on bootcamp to practice transforming their entrepreneurial ideas into actionable prototypes and business plans.

The programme also includes a Global Immersion Week, during which students travel to international business hubs such as London, Amsterdam, Berlin, or Dubai. During these intensive weeks, MiM students visit leading companies and startups, attend masterclasses with industry leaders, and network with IE alumni working globally. These experiences provide invaluable exposure to different startup ecosystems and international business cultures.

Network Widely

IE University Careers Forum

The international diversity at IE University is a genuine competitive advantage for students preparing for global startup ecosystems. Over 80% of students at IE University are from outside Spain, with more than 140 nationalities represented on campus each year.

This diversity extends to the faculty members, many of whom bring extensive industry experience to the classroom. This practical perspective is invaluable for students who need to understand how business concepts translate into the realities of startups.

Additionally, a variety of on-campus career events ensure that students can connect with professionals outside their Master’s in Management programme. For example, the IE Careers Forum takes place twice a year, bringing over 100 recruiting companies to campus.

Notably, 91% of MiM graduates secure employment within three months of graduation, with many joining consulting (21%), finance (20%), and technology (22%) roles – sectors closely connected to the startup ecosystem.

Surround Yourself with Innovation

South Summit 2025

IE University was founded in 1973 by entrepreneurs as a dedicated entrepreneurship university – so innovation runs in its blood, so to speak. Since then, the school has advanced in entrepreneurship teaching and now offers an unparalleled ecosystem of innovation initiatives specifically designed to help students develop and launch ventures.

Central to this ecosystem is Area 31, a base for entrepreneurial collaboration at IE University. This space is home to IE Venture Lab, IE’s flagship startup accelerator program. Open to all students and alumni, the Venture Lab helps teams create ready-to-launch startup projects through intensive mentorship, workshops, and access to entrepreneurial networks.

Each year, over 1,000 students participate in the Venture Lab, gaining access to mentorship from professors, successful entrepreneurs, and investors. At the annual Venture Day 2025, 10 finalists from the Venture Lab programme pitched their ideas to international investors.

Beyond the Venture Lab, students can access numerous hands-on initiatives:

  • IEU Labs: On-campus, internship-like experiences where students work on real professional projects with companies, startups, and institutions.
  • South Summit: An annual global entrepreneurship conference co-organised with IE University, attracting 430+ speakers, 140 investors, and 17 unicorns.

Study in a Global Startup Hub

Madrid

Location matters when launching a startup career, and Madrid offers IE University’s MiM students a vibrant startup atmosphere. The Spanish capital has emerged as a major player in Europe’s startup ecosystem, ranking 40th globally and 7th in Europe in the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2025. In recent years, Madrid has overtaken Barcelona in the amount of venture capital directed to startups; the city is home to 33,000 technology jobs.

The city’s appeal extends beyond the attractive entrepreneurial environment. This year, EDUopinions student reviewers ranked it among the top student cities in Europe, and business students can enjoy an exceptional quality of life with lower living costs than in other European capitals.

More broadly, the Spanish government actively supports the country’s startup ecosystem through initiatives such as the Startup Law, which offers tax breaks and simplified business registration for new ventures.

IE University - If you want practical learning experience, IE is the best choice

IE has a very practical approach to teaching and I believe it’s one of the biggest advantages of the university compared to the rest of Europe. Moreover, we students have the privilege to be surrounded by people from all around the world with many different nationalities which makes us exposed to a variety of cultures and helps us become more open-minded.

Masters in Management

The MIM programme at IE is really comprehensive for someone who doesn’t have a background in management. If you’re lucky, you get taught by professors from very diverse backgrounds and that helps in developing perspective and a variety of opinions. I definitely feel that I have benefited from this course.
However, perhaps the size of the intake is something that the programme management is unable to handle and that’s why the scheduling is a mess. Also, sometimes the faculty diversity is not as promised. It really depends on the student’s luck, which shouldn’t be the case.

Best university for international students

I am an Indian with a technical background. I took up a course in Data Science for my Master’s. The hands-on training for assignments, the skilled professors, and the most supportive management helped me study and enjoy my course. It was a great break from the mundane work environment providing a home-like feel. I used to spend most of my time working on campus. Who will say no to free wifi and a pleasing ambience? The group assignments helped me to anticipate the work culture and created a collaborative environment. At IE, I learned a lot about my strength and weakness.

Demanding program with great learning curve

The Global Master’s in Big Data and Business Analytics is a demanding program for professionals. The learning curve is steep and it allows me to gain experience from the excellent peers in the program. In addition, the career prospects are extremely high since employers value studying while working experience. The only negative aspect of the part-time master’s program is that it is difficult to join the IE community with all its amazing events due to the high workload. Overall, I am extremely happy I joined the program and I would definitely recommend it.
