If you prefer the practical over the theoretical, you might think university isn’t for you – but have you considered a university of applied science? At these institutions, practical theory and hands-on teaching are prioritised over strictly theoretical work, resulting in a degree that’s built for a future career. But where are the best universities of applied sciences in Europe?

Universities of applied science are also known as hogescholen in the Netherlands and as Hochschulen für Angewandte Wissenschaften (HAWs) or Fachhochschulen (FHs) in Germany. All of these terms refer to a practical-oriented institution with close ties to industry, offering students opportunities to gain real-world experience while studying.

As part of the EDUopinions Student Reviews Guide 2025, we created rankings of the best universities in Europe according to genuine student ratings. One of the universities in that top 10 ranking – no spoilers! – was a university of applied sciences. But which other universities of applied sciences are rated highly by students? We returned to our Student Reviews Guide data to find out.

Student Reviews Guide 2025: Best Universities of Applied Sciences in Europe

Summary and Methodology

To find out which universities of applied sciences students consider the best, we analysed student reviews left between January 1st 2024 and December 31st 2024. Next, we included only those universities with more than 20 reviews to improve the accuracy of ratings. The following ranking represents the top three universities of applied sciences on the list.

3. University of Applied Sciences – HTW Berlin

HTW Berlin

HTW Berlin (Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft) is Berlin’s largest university of applied sciences, yet it manages to keep classes to just 40 students, improving the learning experience. Located in the energetic and creative German capital, HTW offers over 70 programmes in business, engineering, design, and computer science. Eight programmes are exclusively taught in English, including two specialised MBA programmes: MBA & Engineering and MBA & Engineering in Life Science Management.

HTW’s strong ties to industry and its Berlin location provide students with fantastic opportunities to intern and network with start-ups, tech firms, and international companies. But you can also expect lots of student events on campus and across the city – this university of applied science is for those who want a diverse student life.

Positive for growth

I appreciate that HTW fosters an environment conducive to growth, motivation and self-improvement. It provides extensive resources to explore various career paths or courses. However, I don’t like how some people interact in college; “Equilibrium” can be so extreme that it becomes difficult to find people you really like or connect with.

Rigorous without losing your mind

My undergraduate experience at HTW was excellent overall. The academics were rough but didn’t negatively impact student mental health. There were always plenty of clubs, involvement opportunities, and events to participate in during my free time. Research opportunities at the hospital were easily accessible, and professors were generally very supportive.

NHL Stenden Marketing Management review

I’m a first year international student, doing marketing management in Leeuwarden. I chose NHL Stenden because how international and welcoming the atmosphere was and I do not regret my decision. I really enjoy that the university is so practical. We have multiple practical classes a week where we actually apply the knowledge we learned in the theoretical classes. Already from the first weeks we’ve been working with real life companies, which gives us a great advantage and experience in the future. We had to get used to working on our own and the flexible schedules which might be harder for some than others. Overall NHL Stenden provides lots of amazing opportunities for everyone through their courses which include travelling and studying all over the world.

A Lesiure and Events Management Perspective

I’ve had a largely positive experience at NHL Stenden University, particularly due to its hands-on approach to various projects. We often have the opportunity to collaborate with real-life clients from the local area, which makes the learning process feel much more practical and relevant. That said, it’s important to enjoy working in groups, as many projects are team-based. However, sometimes it can feel like that the theoretical parts falls a bit behind.

One aspect I really value is the sense of community. Classes are generally small, which creates a more personal environment. I was surprised to find that in my year’s international stream, Dutch students were actually in the minority compared to internationals. But during your studies, you can sometimes be confronted with the fact that Dutch skills are really helpful. Sadly, not all international degrees offer free Dutch classes.

However, while the freedom we have with assignments is great, it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. It’s fantastic that we can choose our own approach to many tasks, but without clear guidelines, it can sometimes feel a bit unclear. Luckily, most teachers and coaches are very supportive and approachable, so you’re never completely on your own.

Definitely consider checking out the university! 🙂

A diverse learning experience at KdG

As a second-year student in the Applied Computer Science program at KdG in Antwerp, I’ve had a rewarding experience so far. One of the standout aspects of KGG is its strong international focus. Students here come from all corners of the world, making it a unique and diverse environment where you can connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds. The university also supports students who want to study abroad, providing guidance and opportunities to gain global experience.

Another highlight is the flexibility that KdG offers in terms of study options. While I’m studying Applied Computer Science, KdG provides a bunch of other courser whether it would be something business oriented or something creative.
