Is it worth taking IELTS?

Universities that offer programmes in English ask for proof that you can speak, write and comprehend the language. However, IELTS is not the only option to choose from. For example, you can also present TOEFL or Cambridge scores. In some cases, if you don’t have an existing certificate, you can sit an English exam at the business school or university you would like to attend. The test will be evaluated along with the rest of the documentation presented during the application process. The internal exam is normally free, or cheaper than the IELTS, which costs roughly €235, or more if you decide to undertake a preparation course.

It is important that you prepare for the test, even independently, to get used to its structure. The Academic test is divided into four sections: listening, academic reading, academic writing, and speaking. The listening part lasts 30 minutes, academic reading and academic writing last 60 minutes each, and speaking lasts up to 14 minutes. Last but not least, IELTS scores are valid only for two years, so make sure that you apply to colleges before it expires, otherwise it may not be accepted.

Who needs IELTS?

Generally speaking, all Non-English speakers applying for programmes taught in English have to take the IELTS, or similar. However, there are a few exceptions. In fact, if you have previously studied in English, you don’t have to take the test as your diploma already counts as proof. Keep in mind that for some countries, including the UK, IELTS is mandatory for those applying for visas.
