To find out what it’s like to be an international student in Milan, we spoke to Oleg Smirnov, who recently graduated from a Master’s in Marketing Management at Bocconi University. Although originally from Russia, Oleg chose to study his Master’s in Italy at Bocconi.

Why did you choose to study Marketing at Bocconi, and what convinced you to move to Italy for university?
Coming from a background in economics and social anthropology, I was searching for a Master of Science program that would combine an analytical and data-driven approach with an opportunity for quantitative research, aiming to better understand our society. So, marketing seemed like a natural fit, being a field that blends strategy, psychology, communication, and innovation.
I have developed a deep affection towards the Italian culture during the summertime holidays in Italy. For that reason, not only did I participate in an exchange program at the University of Bologna, but I set my mind to completing my graduate studies in Italy.
Bocconi University stood out to me immediately, not only for its academic reputation but also for its strong ties with the business world and focus on creating future-proof people.
What ultimately convinced me to move to Italy was Bocconi’s international outlook and the city of Milan itself. Milan is a global capital of fashion, design, and business; there is hardly a better place to be to study marketing and how it evolves.

What was your experience like as an international student in Milan, both academically and personally?
My experience as an international student at Bocconi has been incredibly enriching. Academically, the courses are intense and intellectually stimulating, with a strong focus on group projects and case studies.
We worked with real companies like Google, Henkel, and Nespresso – in fact, our team won the best project award from Nespresso. These projects weren’t just classroom exercises – they gave us a glimpse into the kind of challenges we are going to face in our careers.
Milan itself is an amazing place to live. It has the energy of a big European city, but also a strong sense of Italian culture. Whether you’re into art, fashion, food, or nightlife, you’ll find your place here. And it is well-connected – one could travel easily across Europe and explore Italy’s magnificent culture and landscapes.

What professional opportunities did Bocconi offer you during and after your studies?
Bocconi helped me launch my career. During my studies, I worked on consulting projects for global brands and eventually joined Jakala, a strategic marketing consultancy, where I contributed to high-level campaigns for Bulgari.
I also had the opportunity to work for Bocconi itself – in the Guidance and Recruitment Office – helping prospective students, managing events, analysing data, and managing some part of the university’s front end. It was a great way to give back and stay involved.
The university’s alumni network and career services are incredibly strong. Even before graduating, I had real-world work experience, professional connections, and a clear direction. Bocconi’s name is widely recognised, not only in Italy but across Europe.

What advice would you give to an international student considering Bocconi?
If you’re thinking about Bocconi, my advice is simple: go for it. It’s an intense, fast-paced environment, but also one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll have. Be open to stepping out of your comfort zone. Say yes to projects, join student clubs, connect with classmates from around the world.
Don’t be afraid of not knowing Italian at first. All Master of Science programs are fully in English, and there is a strong international community here. But do take the opportunity to learn the language and embrace the culture, it will only deepen your experience.
