Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), also referred to as the Central University of Venezuela is a prestigious public university in Caracas in Venezuela. It is a renowned university- it is the highest ranking higher education institution in the country. It consistently ranks among the top 20 in Latin America. Ever since its foundation in 1721, it has been training highly skilled graduates. The school is the oldest university in Venezuela; it is one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Its roots can be traced back to the Colegio Santa Rosa de Lima in 1673. It gained official university status in 1721, when it became the Universidad Real y Pontificia de Caracas. The main campus was designed by Carlos Raúl Villanueva and is considered a masterpiece of urban planning. In 2000, the campus was also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The school is comprised of 11 faculties, that are home to 40 departments and five research centres, which are spread across the country. Today, 54,222 undergraduate and 8,317 graduate students are enrolled at further education at UCV. UCV has a wide range of degree programmes, in a variety of study areas. The university has a large alumni network that includes notable alumni, such as 14 of Venezuela's presidents, and many scientists, politicians, and many more.
