What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    Terrible online M.Ed programs

It is very rare that I feel regret about the past, but joining W&M’s online program in school counseling was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. There are far more affordable options, but I thought that the university’s reputation warrants paying more. Huge mistake. Very few professors are trying to teach. Most classes are “taught” by adjuncts (and I use the word teach very liberally here). Teaching really only involves watching a few poor quality videos (some of which are from YouTube), read a textbook, and write a paper, on which you receive nearly zero feedback. I haven’t done a poll but a huge number of students are unhappy and would transfer if not for the money already spent. After nearly 2 years in the program, I am certain that only a couple of faculty member would even recognize my name – asking anyone for a recommendation letter, for example, would be impossible. The faculty really tries to spend as little time as possible on this program, seeing it as a quick and easy pay check. I will qualify that there have been a couple of professors who were outstanding, but they are truly an exception. Course reviews are never addressed and nothing changes. Suddenly, mid-program, the school of education raised tuition by 25% (!) citing inflation. They can and will do this arbitrarily. While this may sound like a rant it is not. I am simply hoping to prevent others from making the mistake that I have made. I was choosing between several programs and made the worst choice imaginable.

I have been considering this program and deciding on which grad school to attend. Would you say there are any pros?

Sure. While many of my fellow students have expressed disappointment and transferring as an option, many others seem to be Ok with the program. Haven\'t met someone who was super happy with it, tho. After a bunch of upset emails to the Dean, the school agreed to a compromise, making the hike in tuition more gradual. So at least they did engage with us, the students. High quality of students. Fellow students are very good and working with them on group projects is a good learning experience. Also, because we take courses in sequence, we work primarily with the same group of peers, getting to know each other and feeling a little less of the loneliness that can come with online study. Many professors just don\'t care about the student experience. Some do, however, and these classes have been very good.Among the more *brand\" universities, this program is not as expensive as most. For the two in person residencies, the campus is beautiful.Still, if I had to make my decision today, I would go with a cheaper program or, if possible, a brick and mortar one. I don\'t feel like it\'s been worth it, given how there are far cheaper options.
