MACCA is a major dance program with a theater arts department – all within the College of Arts and Sciences. Being in the same department, we have many opportunities for acting and performing in musical theater as well as employment opportunities throughout the city. Howard’s dance program is the only full BFA program at a historically black college/university, so we serve the core of the black dance community and beyond. Our founder Dr. Cheryl Berryman-Johnson established the program with ongoing relationships with several organizations such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Philatanko, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, and Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Practice now The curriculum provides a unique and broad foundation for the study of our art – from a technical, managerial and administrative perspective. The only disadvantage of our school is the existing conditions. We need additional dance studios as well as an expansion of the entire fine arts building to accommodate all performing and visual artists. Howard University’s location in the heart of Washington offers many opportunities for creative, professional and academic development.
