Coming into the University of Michigan, I was extremely excited to begin my journey at one of the top universities in the country. When I got here, it definitely felt overwhelming especially coming from virtual COVID classes my senior year to in person classes. I believe that I was able to adjust more due to my scholarship program which is a small community. I credit most of my success and comfort at the university due to this program. This particular program gives first generation students many opportunities including workshops, free headshots, etc. I truly feel valued in this program and I’m glad that I’m apart of it. I took stars off of the university as a whole because on a larger scale, I don’t feel valued by the university. While mental health resources are always available, they are not great. When I wanted assistance, I attempted to reach out to the most popular resource on campus, CAPS. CAPS is always the first suggestion given to students who want assistance. I tried to sign up and was met with an extremely long process and a 2 month long waitlist. I heard from another student that when they did get through, the representative they spoke to told them that there’s nothing wrong with them and to give their spot to someone who needed it. I do not believe that the mental health of students is a top priority for the university.
