Established in 1854 as Salem Normal School by the humanitarian endeavours of Horace Mann, the Salem State University looks back upon a long history. Horace Mann was a former Massachusetts state legislator and Secretary of Education, seeing education as an equaliser. In 1932, the school was renamed Salem Teachers College. In 1960, it became the State Teachers’ College at Salem. In 1968, the name was then changed to Salem State College. During that time, the campus was developed impressively, as new buildings and halls were constructed. It was not until 2010 that the school was named Salem State University. Since its founding, Salem State University has not shifted from its focus to providing education to those, who might not have had the same access to it.
Currently, the university offers both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in their many Colleges, such as their College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, College of Health and Human Services, School of Education, School of Graduate Studies and School of Continuing and Professional Studies. As for the programmes to choose from, Salem State University has over 280 to choose from, including different kinds of languages, architecture, communications, business administration, social sciences, health studies and much more. Today, the university is one of the largest state universities of the Commonwealth and was named a Top Producer of U.S. Fulbright Scholars in 2011 and 2017.Show more
