What Is a Philosophy Degree?

Contrary to popular belief, Philosophy degrees are not just about sitting and wondering about the meaning of life. This type of degree gives students a wider perspective about how to tackle different issues – thus preparing them for the outside world.

Philosophy degrees are shaped in such a way that encourages candidates to make use of logic and ethics for the in-depth study of fundamental issues.

Therefore, Philosophy enhances interpretive, analytical, imaginative, critical, and communicative skills. Candidates will acquire intellectual capacities which are of utmost importance for self-fulfilment and active participation in public life. In addition, they will experience success in a wide range of careers, such as law, business, education, journalism, and so on.

Benefits of a Philosophy Degree

The essential benefit gained from having a Philosophy degree is the mindset you acquire. Graduates learn how to constructively tackle major problems and come up with the best solutions.

Studies have shown that Philosophy is one of the most sought-after majors in Humanities in the market place. Why? The answer lies in the creative mindset and set of transferable skills that can be applied in various areas of expertise, not only Philosophy. What employers appreciate about Philosophy graduates is their problem-solving and thinking skills as well as their organised way of laying out information.

Last, but not least, those who pursue a Philosophy degree acquire numerous life skills, which can be applied both on a personal and professional level. Thus, they grow as individuals, through effective communication, critical thinking and the ability to see a problem from different angles.

Philosophy Degree Structure

Philosophy courses are usually three-year commitments and they come under the form of a Bachelor of Arts. The major concentrates on the history of Philosophy, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Justice and Values and so on. Furthermore, they can be easily combined with other minors.

    Desperate for Diversity

I began my studies at Transylvania University in August of 2018, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. I had later changed my major to Religious Studies, but in both departments, the professors were amazing. The best part about Transylvania is the academic faculty. They are passionate about what they do and they work hard at an institution that pays them lower than the average public institution.

As for my title, I am going to highlight why Transylvania is NOT the school for you to attend.
Transylvania University has a history (like many institutions) that is rooted in racism, classism, and prejudice. Although they would like you to think that they have left that era and are a school for all, they are not telling the whole truth. There are more students of color than I can name that have left the institution because of bad treatment, often through the form of systemic and blatant racism from the school and from the student body. The student body is made up of mostly wealthy, white, fraternity students, so if you aren’t a part of that category, you’ll probably feel left out. Since finances for most students are a non-issue, the school and its affiliated organizations have zero regard for the students who are working class, struggling through semesters of arduous assignments while also working full time jobs to pay for their schooling, housing, and food. This school is not for those who don’t have wealthy parents paying for everything.

The school itself is also in a very bad situation when it comes to finances. Transylvania was surveyed by the accreditors of the institution and was told that they are not being good stewards of their budget. This financial struggle comes out when you need to take an extra class or want to go on a travel-abroad trip, etc. If it is anything that affects the finances of the school, they will do everything they can to make sure you pay them as much as possible and doing the least amount of programming that will cost them.
