With former names such as South Park Junior College, Lamar College, and Lamar State College of Technology – Lamar University looks back on a long history beginning in September 1923. It was named after the second president of the Republic of Texas – Mirabeau B. Lamar. A growth of enrolment was noticeable throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1970, the Lamar State College, how it was called at that point in time, offered its first doctoral programme in engineering. It was not until 1971 that the college’s name was finally changed to Lamar University. In 1995, Lamar University was incorporated into the Texas State University System and since then, the school’s enrolment has continually increased.Show more
