Hofstra University • Long Island, United States
Consistently ranked as one of the best colleges in the USA and internationally, this private institution can be found 25 miles (40km) east of New York City. Hofstra has offered courses at undergraduate and masters levels since its founding in 1935, when it was a part of NYU. Today, around 10,000 students attend the university and are from both the United States and abroad. Hofstra has an impressive reputation, thanks in part to its hosting of presidential debates (for the 2012 and 2016 campaigns, for example).
The institution is based at an impressive campus full of modern facilities – sporting, technological, and academic. There are also around 200 student organisations at students’ disposal.
As for academics, over 140 undergraduate programmes are run at Hofstra, and the university is divided into various schools covering an extremely broad range of subject areas: Maurice A. Deane School of Law, Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hoftsra/Northwell, Peter S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy, and International Affairs, School of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, Frank G. Zarb School of Business, School of Health Professions and Human Services, Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies, School of Education, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (AKA Hofstra College or Hofstra College of Arts & Sciences), Honors College, Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, and School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Research is also conducted at Hofstra and is facilitated by several centres and institutes at the university, for example the Center for Climate Study, the Institute for the Study of Gender, Law and Policy, and the Center for Entrepreneurship. The Office for Research and Sponsored Programs aids those who wish to do research work at Hofstra.
Residence halls are available as accommodation for a number of students as well as many options for food and drink on campus, and several fraternities and sororities.
