I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Urban Affairs in 2018 from Harris-Stowe State University, a Historically Black College. I had a great experience there. I particularly appreciated that the curriculum was challenging, yet comprehensive, and the professors were very caring and attentive to their students. Harris-Stowe is also an intergral part of the local community. For example, the university offers a program called the Center for Neighborhood Affairs (CNA), which is affiliated with the Urban Affairs program. Its aim is to utilize the university’s resources to support community-based groups in revitalizing challenged neighborhoods through “service learning.”
I had a wonderful experience at HSSU; however, the university lacked some resources. The small size of the school was an advantage in terms of fostering close relationships, but it also meant that some of the facilities and extracurricular activities were more limited compared to larger universities.
Would I recommend? Absolutely! Harris-Stowe is an ideal learning environment, especially for students who thrive in smaller, more intimate settings and are interested in urban studies, education, and community service-oriented programs. If you’re looking for a large, vibrant campus, it may not be the best fit, but for those focused on community engagement and a personalized experience, it’s an excellent choice.
