History and Students

Students come from all over the United States, as well as a portion of international students, and over 90% live on campus in college accommodation. The campus itself is a historic site, reflecting the college’s connections with the early history of the United States. These links are also evident in the college’s motto; ‘Alenda Lux Ubi Orta Libertas’ or in English; ‘Let Learning Be Cherished Where Liberty Has Arisen’ which is thought to be influenced by the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence signed in 1775.

Around 25% of Davidson students compete in Division l athletics, aided by the institution’s athletic facilities which cater for all levels, continuing the college’s tradition in athletic competitions. Davidson students truly are rounded human beings by the time they graduate – 80% complete a study or work placement abroad while attending the college. Davidson operates at 10 other locations, as well as keeping up relationships with 79 partners across the globe.

Traditions

Davidson College’s Honor Code is an extremely important guide for students on how to act both academically and in their personal lives. Students must sign and more importantly adhere to the Code, which brings with it certain rewards, which themselves carry responsibilities.

Another Davidson tradition is the Cake Race, now a voluntary part of the welcome for first-year students and the town of Davidson. Students from the college run 1.7 miles for the reward of a homemade cake at the finish line. The race also helps coaches to identify athletic talent for the inter-varsity teams.
