I have been going to Columbia since fall 2020, the first full year of which was completely online due to the pandemic. While I have had great experiences in the classroom, have learned a lot about my field, and have had great professors, the university as an institution is corrupt from all directions. There is almost no mental health support for students, but the competive environment on top of general life challenges leads to many students struggling with depression and anxiety. We have had several students commit suicide this year alone, and all the school does in response is set up “wellness” events.
