The best thing about off-campus living is how much more expensive it is than living on campus. The dorms themselves range from spacious studios with Hudson views to tiny, claustrophobic double rooms. Private bathrooms are uncommon, and the best lodging is often reserved for upper-class students (although there are plenty of great freshman options, and Columbia offers you the rare opportunity to live like a single freshman). The majority of dorms are conveniently close to school (up to 15 minutes by foot), and many of them include classic Columbia and city architecture. If you don’t obtain a big number in the house lottery, it can be difficult and highly stressful. The majority of dorm rooms lack adequate kitchens.
