I enjoyed my time at Chester, I made some great friends and enjoyed most of my lectures; however, I do think I would have been better off going to another university, in a bigger city which pushed their students to a higher standard. My degree was “Geography with French” and I found the departments were quite different.
The geography department was much larger than the French and the quality of the lectures delivered within the geography department varied massively – depending on the lecturer. The geography has some great staff and some really not so great. For example, some were more helpful and created more interactive lectures rather than reading off of a PowerPoint which we could do ourselves.
The French lectures were great in first year but by second year I felt like we were felt to our own accord. My level of French was worse by the end of university than it was by the end of A-levels. There is limited speaking practice at the university which I think is the most important skill when learning a language.
