A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.
Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.
The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.
One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.
Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.
Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.
Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.
Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.
Management degrees take 3 years to complete in the UK. However, their duration could extend to 4 years if students choose to spend a year in industry between their second and third year, which is a popular option among the student community. Setting placement opportunities apart, the duration of a Management degree depends on three main factors – country, mode of study (part-time or full-time) and degree level. Below are listed the approximate durations of Management degrees in the most popular countries for Higher Education in Europe:
I like that there is a lot of support and help in the course and that I can ask my lecturers to help with anything. They understand that university is hard and that mental health is also a massive struggle for a lot of people while at university. I don’t like that there isn’t a lot of motivation for going into university and the way they handled the covid period where we were going in then not going in and it’s very uneasy for a lot of people and really hard to then motivate yourself to go into uni when we were able to go back in and I feel like there should have been more support on that.
View moreThe facilities of Solent University are really good. The classes are new with good equipment. The classes are easy to be found and even if you need help you can ask anyone and they’ll help you out. A great university.
View moreI like everything! The teachers, accommodation and the lessons. It is really great and an amazing atmosphere between everyone. I truly recommend Solent University! It helps you to develop in every area that you wish to excel.
View moreI am a second-year student at Solent University. Due to COVID our first year was completely remote now changing into blended learning. I must say given that is a university in England you would expect English tutors and teachers rather than full foreigners. Putting this aside they know what they are doing and definitely love their job. The majority of modules are very helpful and I love that they put emphasis on self-development and reflection as well, rather than superficial calculations and maths.
View moreThe management of Southampton Solent University has managed to provide to all of us students an incredible environment for studying, development and recreation as well. The university is located at the center of the beautiful city of Southampton which provides the perfect opportunity to live and work near the campus and all the essential buildings you will need to go to. So far I have been amazed by the exceptional setting including the exterior and the internal design of the premises. We can clearly see that they have invested a tremendous amount of money to develop two of the latest additions to the campus – The Spark Building that provides contemporary lecture and seminar rooms, common areas and cafes along with The Sports Complex Building which includes three different gyms and two giant sports halls where the “Solent Kestrels” basketball team trains and plays. The staff has been amazingly helpful from the very beginning until now. As a Business Management student, I usually have my lectures in the Sir James Matthews Building which is where the Business, Law and Communications School is located. This building finds its place two minutes away from the main one. This building is home to the very popular Artisan Cafe which serves amazing coffee as well as delicious award-winning food to students, staff, and members of the public. My Business Management course is built around numerous subjects which are covered during those three years. From Accounting to Consultancy and Economics this course provides many interesting and essential areas to focus on. The only drawback for me is the short period of time that we have in order to complete them however the university lecturers and tutors make their best to help us and give us enough time to prepare. An area that I think not only me but many students enjoy going is the Mountbatten Library which is a 5-floor university library with the incredible resources available to us. On exam session periods there is a very useful and helpful option provided by the Solent Students’ Union which is a free taxi service to all Solent Accommodations along with extra locations covered around the university which guarantees all students are going back home safely. There are many fairs and exhibitions that take place in Solent which help us develop ourselves and find future companies and industries to work in. It’s amazing to be aware of so many extracurricular events and activities because this way you are able to build your network of friends and business partners and gain crucial insight about what to expect. A big opportunity for all that would like to start their own business is the Solent Enterprise Grant that gives up to £10 000 for innovative business ideas that get accepted. Not only this but the university provides also scholarships and awards for academic and sports achievements which is an amazing support to us. As a student in the university of the year for 2019, I think Southampton Solent would be a great choice for everyone who wants to study in a competitive and supportive environment full of different cultures and backgrounds.
View moreMy opinion of the University so far is a positive one. I have had any help that I needed with moving in, I am finding the lectures very easy to understand and it is all very step by step focused when delivering the tasks. The Ice-Breakers in the first week were helpful and informative regarding the wide range of diversity between the students in my class. The student housing has been good; despite the loud noises outside the window when everyone goes to the clubs or are just out in general but honestly what else is there to be expected from ‘Uni Life’. As well as the ease with the actual university helping with lesson structure, registration and all of that jazz, like setting up a doctor for the time here; I have found the discounts given for students brilliant and as soon as I moved in there was a ‘DigIn’ box with some goodies in it which shows that the Student Union of the University really do care. The care is also shown through the constant presence of a red shirt-wearing student representative that can advise at any time.
That’s all I have so far but I will update as the first year goes on.
