What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

Management degrees take 3 years to complete in the UK. Holistic experience

The University of St Andrews provides students with a well-rounded academic as well as extra-curricular experience. The University is spread over the entire town, creating a spread out campus town sprawled with mostly students. There are 100’s of courses to choose from and 1st and 2nd years are provided the flexibility of changing their courses every semester. On top of that, there are numerous clubs and societies involved in various activities from debating to dog walking to fashion shows to choose from. The town has an old-world charm, with its cobble streets and beautiful monuments. The town of St. Andrews greatly supports its locals, leading to lack of corporate brands in the the town. However, St Andrews is only a 20 minute drive to dundee and a 1 hour drive to edinburgh. The University is a prestigious one, known for its academic excellence and knowledgeable staff. Whether its research or practical based, each student gets an all-round education, eventually leading to high career prospects.

Cool events, good resources, incredible diversity

I initially went to do physics and didn’t enjoy it so switched to management. Change was well supported and seamless – there’s a lot of flexibility although it does vary a little school to school. The uni has nice facilities, nice buildings, a nice library – it all comes together well. Amazing events, incredible mix of wonderful people. Small town vibes, you get to know like everyone. My time at uni started from the bottom and became the best of my life, more than I could’ve ever imagined at first.

    Excellent mentor system

The students at the University of St. Andrews have become like my family. All the traditions and social activities that the town offers tend to make everyone friends with everyone, so it never gets lonely. One great tradition that the university has is its mentor system where the mentor’s and mentee’s don’t only work on making the educational experience better but also the student life in general. This relationship between the mentor and mentee is known as an ‘academic family’. The academic family helps each other through all hardships and makes sure that by the end of the day there is someone to rely on. It is a genius mentor system. Besides that, the university offers top-class education and helps you develop as an all-rounder. I would highly recommend this University to anyone looking for a great balance of excellent education and great fun.

    St. Andrews

My 4 years at the University of St Andrews have been the best yet.

There is literally never a dull moment in St Andrews- from the unique traditions to a plethora of societies and committees that we can be a part of, to just walking around town enjoying the breath-taking views and bumping into familiar faces. This quaint little town truly becomes home.

St Andrews is a community that values who you are and helps you grow both personally and academically in a supportive environment. I would recommend it in a heartbeat.

    St Andrews became my home!

The University of St Andrews was easily the best decision I made. I’m currently going into my last year and I’m so sad that my 4 years are coming to an end – I never want to leave. Being such a small town, St. Andrews gives you such a community feel, everyone becomes family. I’ve met some really cool people, made super important connections and found friends for life. I came in wanting to only study management, but I will leave having done a joint honours in Economics and management. St Andrews gives you a lot of flexibility to really find the course you love and guide you impeccably through the whole process. It is a lot of hard work but I found my course so well structured and interesting that it made me want to put in that extra work, and the professors are super hands-on and helpful too. All in all, my experience has been absolutely amazing – apart from the terrible weather of course!

I love it but could be better!

First of all, I love the city of St Andrews and I am 100% sure I made the right choice when choosing this University (thank God, cause one of my biggest fears was regretting my choice). Anyway, it is very international (I, for example, am from Brazil) and my friends come from all over the world, which is amazing. I love the atmosphere of the city and of the University itself and I feel extremely comfortable there and at home. I do like my courses and professors, some more than others but that is to be predicted since it depends on your personal preferences. I do think however that classes could be more practical (very few are) with more case studies where you can actually apply your knowledge to the real-word, I think one of St Andrews biggest flaws is that it is very theoretical. Having said that, it is an extremely prestigious university so I think the chances of getting a good job are quite high, I for example have gotten prestigious internships at home and in London. However, I do feel it depends on each student own effort and capabilities, so the University could definitely better prepare us for job applications

    Best decision I ever made

I believe that choosing the University of St. Andrews is the best decision I ever made. From the first time I visited the small town of St. Andrews in 2016, I fell in love with its beauty and immediately decided that I wanted to make it my home for the next 4 years. I am now going into my 4th year and am trying to make the most of all the fun traditions that St. Andrews offers. Even though it is a small town, it has different activities and events every day, making sure you never get bored. There are hundreds of societies and charities for students to join and make friends. There is a sense of community. It is also a great feeling to walk around in a town where you know every second person. No one ever gets lonely and it builds a sense of confidence in you. The University is extremely devoted to making sure that the students get the most out of their experience. Even during Covid-19, the University has been so supportive and positive. From sending us links to websites that offer help with mental health and providing us with weekly fitness classes, to being considerate during marking our assignments and exams, the University always does what’s best for its students. I get a great sense of pride being a part of the exciting traditions of St. Andrews. I would 100% recommend the University of St. Andrews to any student looking for a university with a great curriculum as well as to make great lasting memories.
