What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    I choose Oxford now I regret ...

I had to make that happy choice when it came to my masters degree, as I was lucky enough to get offers from both. I picked Oxford because it was generally regarded as the more prestigious of the two for that course of study.

For many courses only one university teaches it but not the other. For other courses one university is regarded as superior to the other. But for a huge swathe of subjects, it really is just a matter of personal choice.

Interestingly, when it came to my doctorate I was quite keen to go to Cambridge – really just to see somewhere new. But personal circumstances conspired against me, and I ended up going back to Oxford.

I prefer Cambridge, but of course I would.

The main differences I see are:

Cambridge is a town. Oxford is a city. Sure, Cambridge has a decent sized population and all that, but it feels like a town – it’s quiet most places at night and it’s mostly pubs not clubs, it’s just sleepier and less busy than Oxford. This might be a positive or negative point for you depending on what you like.
Cambridge is mostly the university and things that have come out of the university, whereas Oxford feels like it also has its own identity as a place. Again, you might prefer one or the other.

It depends a lot on your college, but on average Oxford seems more upper-class and unapproachable in places than Cambridge. Both have their dens of impenetrable upper-class tradition, but Oxford seems to take its much more seriously, whereas Cambridge mostly seems to understand it’s a bit silly and invite you in to have fun rather than mocking you for not knowing what you’re doing. (I come from a lower middle class background without a history of attending university.)

Similarly, Oxford takes a more traditional approach to some subjects than Cambridge does. I liked the way I could pick a variety of science courses alongside my first year of Computer Science at Cambridge.

    Lovely University!

You know what? The gatekeepers are really good at remembering faces and names like no one else. There were over a hundred new students in the college and they could remember them all within a few days of the start of the school year! Some of the bigger colleges had hundreds of new students, and I wondered for a while if they were looking at our group photos, one by one, with a magnifying glass, and writing everyone’s name on the back. In comparison, I only remembered the name of one old grandfather doorman by the time I graduated from my undergraduate degree, which was so humbling. The doormen at the college were all exceptionally friendly, a few of them greeted me warmly every time and it felt like coming home when I walked in.

    Great content and professors

Great professors, great content, and lots of 1-to-1 teaching with professors. We aren’t just force-fed information, we’re constantly asked to think about the what, how, why things are written and taught. The city is only 50min away from London, making it extremely easy to go back and forth for meetings, week-ends etc..

    Freedom to explore

The high tutor-student ratio gives you the freedom to follow whatever you want while benefiting from the support of experts. The city is also full of interesting things to do, so both my work and my free time have been perfectly spent. Being a member of a college, a faculty, and societies as well as the university as a whole also meant I was sure to find friends.
