The best thing about the university is that it offers over 100 combined honours degrees, allowing maximum flexibility for students with multiple interests to study two subject areas as part of a single degree. Passionate about Japanese and ICT? Or perhaps you’re indecisive about Politics and Drama. Whichever the case, you’re free to tailor your studies to meet your own personal, academic and professional needs. There were others in my Japanese Studies classes who had combined Japanese with Computer Science, English Literature, and even Music. Students enrolled on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme are also eligible for a free language module starting at beginner or intermediate levels (A1 to C2) including French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Mandarin. I took full advantage of this opportunity and studied Mandarin, which substantially aided my successful application for a scholarship to continue my education in Taiwan following graduation.
With more than 150 partnerships with partner universities throughout the world, the university has a plethora of international employment and study abroad programs available to take advantage of during your second or third year. Making the most of these opportunities will enrich your student experience, provide you with valuable transferable skills, and help you enhance your CV.
Professors are passionate about their subjects and will always go above and beyond to help you. Students can schedule weekly 1-on-1 sessions with the lecturer to review the lectures and seek guidance on projects or coursework.
The Oxford Brookes Headington campus recently underwent a major remodelling project that resulted in brand new and extremely pleasant study spaces and classrooms, all of which are equipped with the latest technology. The campus boasts extremely accessible facilities; including numerous cafes, a medical centre, a gym, a 24-hour library, a shop, a bank, a student bar, and numerous eateries, all of which are incredibly convenient to have all in one place. Weekly and seasonal events are conducted on or around the main campus and are open to all students. The EJRC (Europe Japan Research Centre) hosts a weekly seminar where guests from Oxford University and other prestigious institutions frequently appear, bringing unique insights into lesser-known aspects of Japanese culture. Very useful for essays and coursework!
The university has a thriving student community with 15 various accommodations to select from; unfortunately, as you’d expect from a university situated in the heart of Oxford, all of the accommodations are slightly on the pricey side; yet, the university does award qualifying students a large non-repayable bursary grant. All of the accommodations are only a short walk or bus ride from the main campus.
